high-risk: which OBGYN? where to deliver?

Hello all,

Hoping for some advice. I also posted this on the DC board -- I'm not sure which is more appropriate!  I'm currently almost 8 weeks along and living overseas. I'll be back just after the 11 week mark and am looking for an OBGYN and hospital. I'll initially be living in Silver Spring with my in-laws, but will hopefully move to the Columbia/Laurel area shortly thereafter.

I've got some issues that I was told would make me high risk, so I want to make sure I choose a doctor and hospital that are equipped to help me and make me feel at ease!

Before moving, I had been seeing Dr. Behram at OBGYN Associates in Silver Spring. She said I could see Dr. Jacobs, who is their high-risk guy, but it looks like he only has privileges at Holy Cross. Any thoughts on Holy Cross versus maybe Howard County? Any recommendations of people or groups who deliver at Howard who are good with high-risk?

Thanks in advance!

  • I don't know about the high-risk aspect specifically, but I delivered DS at Howard County (HCGH) and will deliver this LO there too. Love it there! My OB is Capital Women's Care in Maple Lawn - also great.

Thanks for your reply.  I'd read some good things about Capital Women's Care in Maple Lawn on here, but when I looked up reviews of the individual doctors, they were only 'ok.' I'll look into it more -- thanks!

As a follow-up, I've made an appt with Maple Lawn, but it's odd to me that you don't get to have *one* doctor and that you have to see them all, since "you don't know who will deliver your baby."  That seems a bit weird to me??  I'll give it a shot though!

That is pretty standard in most practice.

Agreed, this is standard for any practice with multiple doctors. Whoever is on call the day you deliver will deliver your baby. During your pregnancy you will have a minimum of about 15 appointments so there will be plenty of opportunities to meet all the doctors in a 4 doctor practice like this.

Regarding the doctors at CWC, I can tell you that they are all good in my experience. Dr. Richards is my favorite, followed closely by Dr. Esposito. Both are wonderful, friendly, encouraging, etc. Dr. Seavey I've only met once because she's new since my last pregnancy but she seems very nice as well. Dr. Davis is hit or miss. Sometimes nice, sometimes a little...gruff? He delivered my son and I can tell you that at the time I didn't really care who was down there "catching"!

  • I'd ditto everyone else.  I've been with CWC for multiple pregnancies and found them to be wonderful.  One of the doctors is a little less warm and fuzzy but still fine.  He delivered my first and, like Sarah, I couldn't have cared less at that point who came in to catch the baby.  Everyone else is just wonderful.  They are very careful to make sure you've had plenty of time to meet with each of the doctors throughout your pregnancy.

Keep in mind, too, that if you have one doctor there's no guarantee that he/she will be around on the date that you deliver.  Having multiple doctors at least assures you that you have a good relationship with the doctor that's there on the day of and that they know you and your baby-to-be well.

  • I'd echo what Sarah and Ragdolls said and add that I had a great experience at HCGH and have had only a single (non-baby related) experience with Holy Cross and swear I'd never go back.

  • I delivered my first at Holy Cross and I will be delivering this one there as well. I actually had a trip to Triage there yesterday. I have only had good experiences at HC.
As for larger practices, they commonly have patients rotate through the doctors. That is not a big deal. In fact, with my first the dr I liked the least delivered him. I changed my opinion of her :) She was an angel.

  • I see the Hopkins OB Group and they have an office in Odenton and Columbia. They deliver at Howard County. I've had a wonderful experience so far! When I first found out I was pregnant, I visited three offices in the area and they were the ones I decided to go with after comparing! Love!!
