Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleeping on back?

Hi. My son will be 6 months next week. We have him sleeping in the magic sleepsuit which I love and would continue but he needs to be able to sleep without at day care in September. He will not lay on his back and sleep just plays or will cry. He will roll to his side and occasionally his belly to sleep but he will only sleep
About 20 minutes this way. He wakes up startled I was wondering when that should stop and any advice for helping a baby sleep on back or without magic suit?
Thank you!

Re: Sleeping on back?

  • Take the magic suit away and like pp said, find a sleep training method that will work for you and your family.

  • Thank you. Do you know when the startle reflux should go away? Seems to be that is what wakes him. I don't pick him up when crying but I do pat his back and put his paci in. Mostly so he doesn't wake my 2 year old up. My other son did not have this issue. Thanks for your help :
  • I'm not entirely sure when the startle reflex goes away. My 8 month old son still startles himself if he is sleeping somewhere other than his crib.

  • I started putting DD down on her belly. She sleeps so much better now. She can hold herself up really well and Army crawls all over the place so I felt comfortable doing so.
  • We were lucky as DS hated to be swaddled from day one so we stopped doing it when he was 5 weeks old. I can't remember when DS lost his startle reflex...it seems like it has been a while though. I would just start sleep training him without the magic suit. We had three rough nights moving him from the RNP to the crib...after that it was wonderful. GL!

  • I wouldn't worry about it. By 8 months old he'll be able to roll any way he wants to sleep. They learn to do their own thing at daycare, and it might be totally different than what he does at home.
