First I should probably stop referring to him as a puppy, he's 8, lol. FTR his name is Loki. :]
We have had a very difficult and scary few weeks with our dog. Last week he was barely able to stand and you could just tell he was in pain. We got blood results back and the vet called and basically said we could take him to the emergency vet immediately for a blood transfusion or she would stay late to bring him into her office to be put to sleep. She didn't think he would make it through the night and was shocked he was even conscious as it was.
It is such a difficult thing to decide when they have been through enough. DH was distraught and just kept saying he didn't think he would ever forgive himself if we didn't try the transfusion as it was the last option on the table. So we took him to doggie ER and left him over night. The next day he came home and was visibally feeling better and stronger. But then he got severely sick with liquids uncontrollably coming out of both ends all night, and everywhere in our house.
DH took him back to the vet the next day and we were both thinking the transfusion hadn't worked and his red blood cell count was going to be low again, but it was still holding strong at the same percentage after the transfusion! He had a reaction to the doubled meds and we had to add some GI medicine in to help him cope.
So for the last week we have been giving him medicine 5 times a day. He is such a trooper and just sits there and swallows the pills. His energy is still up but in the back of my mind I still fear the worst. He has a blood draw tonight that will tell us if the Increased meds are helping his condition or not. Basically if his results are the same or better that is WONDERFUL and we can start to hope he will recover. But if his results are lower then the meds are not helping and there is literally nothing else we can do. We will get the results on Thursday.
Sorry for the dear diary post. I'm not really talking to people about all this because I don't want the constant questions. Please send out some happy thoughts to my Loki :]
Re: Puppy update
You are doing him right by exploring all options. I worked the veterinary field for many years, I understand how hard these things can be.
Oh he is eating like a spoiled prince believe me! The meds have stopped his tummy from hurting, but he is getting special wet food that is soft on his stomach along with boiled chicken and white rice. Yes, I've been cooking for my dog in the crockpot! Lol. He is also sleeping in the bed, something that would have never been allowed a few months ago. Funny how your perspective changes :]
Thinking of you and your puppy! (Doesn't matter how old they are, my dog is still my puppy!) It is so hard when they are sick!
I hope your guy gets to feeling 100% soon!
My pups, Brody & Tyson, send Loki some good luck vibes!! Praying for another good draw and that your sweet pup starts a positive path of getting better!
Aaawww.
Sending T & P your way.
Loki sure sounds like a fighter. Please update again when you get the results!
T and P.
Will be praying for Loki.
