No growth scan or NST

Is anyone else NOT having a growth scan or NST?
We are using a MW at a birthing center [delivering at the hospital though] and they do not perform either of these tests regularly. The growth scan I knew about and am fine with. I was told yesterday at my apt they only to a NST if I go over 41 weeks or if there are signs like high blood pressure. For some reason this worries me a little...maybe because I'm a worry wart and just want confirmation everything is ok in there. Anyone else have a similar circumstance at their practice?

  • I get nothing like that. As long as everything is going smoothly.

  • I only had a growth scan to confirm baby had enough room and fluids. My OB said we'll "think about" NSTs when we cross that bridge, but he's not concerned about inductions or anything until around 42 weeks. If I felt something was wrong, though, I'd probably see if he could order one up for me a little sooner.

  • Those are not necessary if you have a normal healthy pregnancy. I am not having either one.

  • None for me...at least until I'm well past my due date!

  • I'm using an ob and I am not having any of those either.
  • Same practice this time, and never had either with my daughter (I was induced at 41 weeks 1 day). If you don't need them, don't stress about it. Those are not standard or requirements.

  • Nope I don't get either. Only NST if I go over 41 weeks.
  • Ok, these replies make me feel better. I've had a perfectly normal pregnancy with no concerns. I'm just a worry wart like I said!
  • I won't get either test, unless its indicated. My OB doesn't feel they're necessary for everyone. But the MW in his practice likes them more. I really hope I go into labor just a tad before my due date so I can avoid all those concerns.
  • I've had three growth ultrasounds b.c they were concerned about my blood pressure, not for sh!ts and giggles.

  • As far as I know I am not doing any NSTs. I am having a few ultrasounds but the is due to a cord insertion issue.

    This.

I go to an OB and she doesn't do anything if all the other stuff looks fine.
  • I only had a growth scan because my fundal height was measuring 4 weeks behind. I don't want or like them as routine care - same with NST. Look for trouble, you'll find it, and then you're induced.
  • I get those things but it's due to IUGR/GD. If I was a "normal" patient, even at my OB's office they would only do an NST if you go to 41 weeks. Growth scans and NSTs aren't the norm.

  • I have both weekly, but I am high-risk.  My SIL who just delivered with a MW didn't have a growth u/s until 41 weeks and they said they would only do another if she made it to 42 weeks (or there was some other cause for concern).  So it seems like maybe that is standard practice?

Yup. I never had any with DS. This time I have to because I am high risk. It sucks.

Plus my insurance doesn't cover 100 percent of the extra stuff like it does the standard. It's not much OOP, but still annoying.

  • neither has been mentioned to me so Im going to say no? I could be wrong (someone more knowledgeable feel free to chime in) but I don't think they are necessary for all pregnancies only if there are complications/risk factors or the doc is worried?

  • If you're still feeling movement and your weekly appointments are going good weight, heartbeat, blood pressure etc then there's no need for the ultrasound or nst.. I'm having a growth ultrasound bc my dr thinks this baby will be huge but if she didn't decide that last week then I wouldn't be having them done either

Considering I have major blood pressure issues too, I would think my Ob would want to do one on me. But nope. Nothing. Makes me a little nervous but I trust my doctor.

  • I was never offered a growth scan. My last ultrasound was my anatomy scan at 18 weeks. Well other than an elective 3d one. I have had a very normal and healthy pregnancy though.

  • The only reason why I get them is because I'm high risk.  If I wasn't high risk, I wouldn't get them either.
