Transitioning to a Toddler Bed

My son is 26 months and still in his crib. He shows no desire to climb out. Is it ok for him to still stay in his crib? My concern about moving him to the toddler bed is him getting up all of the time!

Re: Transitioning to a Toddler Bed

  • I personally think it's fine.   My son never tried to climb out either.  I transitioned him at around 25 months because I actually wanted him to be able to get out of bed in the morning and come into our room, because I was always feeding my newborn when he woke up.  Otherwise, I wouldn't have done it yet.  Thankfully it was a smooth transition.  If it's still working for you, I wouldn't mess with it for at least another few months!

  • My kiddo moved to a toddler bed at 23 months, and we took the front of his crib off at 21 months.  There were extentuating circumstances for both actions.  I was pg with the girls and told I wasn't allowed to pick up my son after a fetal surgery I had, plus with the two babies coming, he needed his own bed and they needed the crib.

Anyway - the transistion was smooth.  As for getting out of bed, we solved the leaving the room issue with a door knob cover, so at least he's contained, but you probably have to super baby proof the room (think cords to the baby monitor, clocks, lamps, etc, and high profile furniture that should be anchored to the wall in case they pull on it.).  He stays in bed most of the time, but if we don't get to him right away, he plays, which is fine with us.  We pick up a lot of books on a daily basis :)

He'd probably still be in his crib unless he had started climbing out, which I am sure he would have by now.  He's a prolific climber.

  • I transitioned my DD to a toddler bed at about 28 months and it was very smooth. Her dad still has her in a crib at his house because its easier for him and he like to stay in bed for a bit in the morning. She does come straight to my room and wake me up in the morning which is ok with me. Some friends have suggested I put up a baby gate so that if she wakes up, she learns to play on her own for a little bit instead of coming to wake me up. I feel like I would just sit and watch her on the monitor anyway though so I don't know what the point would be. It was a very easy transition though. She never fought going to bed at night or for naps!

We transitioned DD to her toddler bed about 6 weeks ago, when she was just shy of 2 1/2.  We'll need the crib for baby #2 and wanted DD to have plenty of time to do the transition and feel comfortable in her new bed.  While she figured out right away she could get out of bed, we haven't had problems with her leaving her room at all.  In the morning when she wakes up, she'll often look at books for awhile before even calling out for us.

My thoughts on this are, if LO isn't trying to escape the crib and you don't need the crib for another baby, don't worry about transitioning to the toddler bed yet.
