Baby Names

Royal baby name

I am really hoping she doesn't choose a name off my list just because it will automatically make it a no for me. I can imagine what ever name she chooses will rise in popularity.

I always wanted to name my child Emma and then Racheal from friends used it and bam... Ruined for me.

Is that silly?

Re: Royal baby name

  • It's not silly to me.  I have loved Phillipa since I was a child, but struck it off my list when Pippa Middleton got to be famous.  I would hate people to think I was that shallow, especially since Phillipa had been on my list since I was a child.

I can definitely see striking the name from the list if the Royal Baby ends up with it as one of its names.

Do you live in the UK?

I see Kate's baby name choice being a big influence in the UK, but not as much on this side of the pond.

Plus, I am sure she is going to pick something uber traditional, so chances are the name she picks will already have been in much used circulation for centuries.

This.  Honestly, if she goes the traditional route (and let's be real, she's not going to name the future King of England, Bentley or Queen of England, Naveah), I would not let that stop me from using the same name.  In the long run, you might regret that you didn't use it more than you'll regret using it!

  • I think it's ridiculous.  They'll pick a nice classic name which has been loved and used for years.

I think it's a little ridiculous, but I do understand where you're coming from. Our top 2 girl names are Camilla and Catherine, so I'm a little worried that people will think I'm a total royal stalker. However when I mentioned it to DH he was like who are Camilla and Catherine?

Most people won't connect it and the ones that do are probably also following the royal news.

  • It's a little silly IMO. I mean, that child isn't going to get some name that 10239847 don't already have anyway. And they may pick a name people hate. The Crown Princess of Sweden got slammed by a chunk of the country for picking a "non-royal" name.

  • Agree with PP that Kate will choose a name that a million other people already have because she's very limited in what she can actually choose due to tradition. I was more worried that Kim was going to steal my baby name because celebs can choose to ruin any name they want - and you can guarantee that a celeb picks an unusual name it will spike in popularity....good thing none of us were planning to name our poor children North. We actually dodged a bullet when she and Kanye picket that doozey of a name.

  • Because we have a traditional/classic name picked out for our baby due in August, I find one reason I'm glad we decided not to tell anyone the name until birth is that this way we can easily still change it if we want to if Wills & Kate pick the same name.  Myself, and a number of my friends, are huge anglophiles so I have some grounds to fear our friends and family will think we named ours after theirs intentionally.  And I can see my mom of all people for the rest of the kid's life making a big deal about them having the same name.  My mom will think its cute and fun. *Shudder*  So, yes, it may be ridiculous of me, but I'm anxiously awaiting the announcement of the royal birth and name announcement so I can (hopefully!) be relieved they didn't use "our" name!  Cause it was hard enough agreeing to one name and we don't have a back up we both feel good about.

I can see your hesitation but it is a bit silly. As pp said, you'd regret not using a name you love because it's a "famous" name vs. regretting it because it is famous. (Obviously depending on the name IE: Madonna, Snooki, etc.)

Plus, it's Princess Kate. She's famous for being future Queen and a role model - not for sitting in a house and being paid to be drunk all the time. Just my thoughts :)

Eh, I'll admit it: I'm scared she's going to pick a name I really like.  I like a looooot of names in the genre they have to use and I'm not interested in hearing "Oh, just like the prince!"  Blech - NO.

do you really think the name Emma became popular from FRIENDS?   That name have been overly popular forever!

She's famous for marrying Prince William not because of some talent, inherent skill or proven role model ability.  She is paid because she married a prince, which makes her about as useless as any other celeb.  Perhaps one day she'll be a role model, so at least she has potential, but most other people have that ability, as well.  She's also a duchess, not a princess.

But, now we're dancing very close to my strong dislike of her, so I'll stop :-)

Goodness. This is a first for me so I'm intrigued. Keep going!!

Kind of harsh about her...she did have a career prior to becoming a duchess and she's a well educated young woman.  IMO way more of a role model as far as celebrities go, she demonstrates class and poise and thats hard to come by today when you look in the news, celebrities etc.

  • I loosely follow royal news, not particularly obsessed, but just interested I studied for a summer in the UK. I honestly don't think I'd be bothered by having my child share the royal baby name. How many Williams in our generation are fretting over sharing the Prince's name? When you meet a young adult William do you think, OH! Your parents must have been obsessed with Princess Di! No precisely because if what pps said they will choose a classic. I also feel like there are much worse "celebs" you could share a name with.

I guess that depends on your definition of "overly popular." Before 2002, it hadn't been in the top 10 since 1894, though it never got lower than #458.

The episode of Friends where Emma was born aired in 2002. Emma went from #13 in 2001 to #4 in 2002. I do think Friends gave it a bump, though it was trending upward before that, too.

  • It will depend on your timing. Within a couple of weeks? I wouldn't use it. A couple of months? Maybe, depending how attached to the name you were. 6 months plus later? Go for it. It's a name. It will be a classic name for sure, so you just say 'I liked it anyway'

  • I don't think it is totally silly. She and I had EDDs close together so I was a little worried if it were a boy that the odds were high she might use our top name choice, George, and it would bump up in popularity. Also the possibility that she could use the name just days before me. I was less worried about it if I had a girl, and that is what I ended up having anyway and my baby came out first. :)
