Babies: 9 - 12 Months

11 mos old and refusing to nap

So my little guy used to be great for naps, but in the past 3 or 4 weeks he has decided its not going to happen anymore.  Regardless of how awake or asleep he is when I lay him down he hops right up to stand in his crib and scream his little head off.  I've tried laying him back down but this upsets him, i've tried going back in in intervals, and I'm also trying CIO without going in at all.

He will eventually fall asleep with CIO but I HATE to let him cry like that during the day.

My question is: what is your nap schedule like, and what works for you?

  • Well today he fell asleep after 30 mins of CIO.  Heartbreaking to hear but I'm totally at a loss as to what else to do.  The guy gets so overtired if he doesn't nap at all.

  • At 11 months she took a short nap between about 9 and 10 and another nap at around 1 that was longer. We let LO CIO for every nap. She refuses to be rocked. Some babies need that "alone" time to whine, cry or talk to themselves in order to wind down.

My best suggestion is to pick one method and stick to it.  Consistency is key here.

When we first started sleep training, I read Ferber's book and did the intervals where I would go in and check on him without picking him up.  I think that upset him more so I just stopped going in.  Now if I put him down for a nap and close the door, if he fusses or cries, I just don't go back in unless it sounds extreme or goes on for more than 10 to 15 minutes, which is rare.

After a few times, he'll get the hang of it.  You should use the same method for naps as you do at bed time so if you aren't putting him down awake and letting him fall asleep on his own at bed time, you should start doing that if you want him to do it at naps too.

  • Koa naps around 9 and 1:30 for 1 hour and 20 minutes (give or take 15 minutes). He just started this in the last week or so. Before, all naps were about 30-45 minutes long.

Have you tried the 2-3-4 routine? Wake up, down after 2 hours, wake up, down after 3 hours, wake up, bed after 4 hours.
