My question is for any moms who have ever experienced back labor, although I am on my 5th baby I have never had back labor. How did it feel in early labor?. Did you know you were in labor? Did you have back pain combined with contractions?
I had it with my last but didn't notice it until I was well into hard labor (6-7cm I think). Turns out she was sunny side up. She finally turned and I went from 7-10 in 60 seconds. It (the back labor) was incredibly painful on top normal labor. And I was in the midst of a pit-induced, non-pain-managed induction.

I have heard the horror stories of back labor. It seems that maybe it doesn't kick in until mid labor. I was asking because my lower back has been very achy today, followed by a wave of tightening around my abdomen, don't want to use the word contration because not to severe. But it did get me thinking if it could be early signs of labor with back labor. Thanks for your input.
I had back labor during the induction for my second child. It felt like someone had a fist pounding and grinding into my lower back. Just awful and much worse than regular labor!
I had it with DD and it was horrendous. It started from the get-go for me. I arrived at the hospital in full-blown labor with pain 10+ and was only at 3cm.
I am praying I have a different experience this time around, but this baby is posterior (DD was too), so I am trying to flip him!
Back labor is pretty severe... or at least mine was with my first. Didn't have it with my second. It was intense shooting pain in the lowest portion of my back and came and went like regular contractions.
Mom of 3 year old, one year old and one on the way (due late Summer 2013).
I've been having the same thing. Lower back pain, like during menstrual cramps, but nothing radiating to the front. My sister had the same with her DD so I'm hoping this is the beginning of things getting started and not just false labor I get to deal with for another two weeks.
I was in pre-term labor last night (luckily we got it to stop) and I had AWFUL back labor. It's like someone is laying a ton of bricks on your back. Think about the worst lower back ache you have ever had and multiply it by ten.

This! It was terrible. It also radiated around to the front but the front was less painful. I had some back labor tonight for like 30 min and it felt the same as when I was induced with DD.

I'm glad you posted this. Was curious what other BTDT moms had to say. As of right now baby is "sunny-side up" and from what I've bee told this is associated with back labor.
I was googling last night what back labor may feel like because I'm worried about it.. I also have always have a lot of back pain with menstrual cramps.
I had back labor as well. My son was sunnyside up. It started out as pain in my butt area as opposed to really my back. It was very minor at first, nothing I was concerned about at all. This all started the day I had him and I did not have ongoing back pain prior to this in my lower back. The pain began at about 9 am and was very mild in nature. I continued to work until noon. I had a doctors appt at around noon because I had been leaking all week. I had been seen earlier in the week for the issue and they told me my water did not break (this was NOT the case). At around noon on the way to the appt, the contracts seemed to be more in my stomach area but it hurt everywhere. I could visibly see my stomache contracting, it was crazy. I knew I was in REAL labor then.
I had to go directly from the OB office to the hospital as my water had actually been broken for several days and infection was an issue. I got an epi right away. Sometimes the back pain would extend past the point where the epi kicked in in my lower back though. I didn't have much pain anywhere after the epi but still some in my lower back. I pushed for 3.5 hours but he was stuck as he was sunnyside up (PRAY this doesn't happen to you). They almost had to use the vacumn, but he finally came out naturally. I still get twinges of LB pain occassionally from this experience, which I never had before.
I had back labor with #2. He was "sunny side up" and was almost 9 lbs. The back labor started pretty early on for me (I went into labor on my own) and the epi did not TOUCH the back labor. Not going to lie, it's a pretty miserable feeling and DS never "flipped" before coming out. I am having #3 in Sept, so obviously, it's one of those things that you will get over as it's totally worth it in the end!

I'm not looking forward to it.
