Traveling Out of the Country with 18 Month Twins

Hi,

This is my first posting on this board.  We're attending a destination wedding in Southeast Asia in January and my twin girls will be about 18 months at that time.  The flight will be around 16 hours and we're pretty nervous but trying to get as prepared as much as possible.

We currently have a City Mini Double GT stroller but that thing is a monster.  We will most likely be using a lot of public transportation on our trip - taxis, subways, etc. - and I want to make sure our stroller will fit.  We also have a Chicco Capri C6 umbrella stroller which I use occasionally when running around with 1 child. The stroller obviously isn't as smooth as the City Mini, but it's lightweight, folds really easily and not too expensive.

I'm thinking of buying a second umbrella stroller for our trip, since I will always be with my DH or another family member so I could have another set of hands to push the second stroller.  Or would using the City Mini Double would be the way to go?

Any other advice from moms of multiples that have travelled long distances with their little ones would also be appreciated!

I haven't travelled nearly that far but I would ask/google about the area to see if 2 carriers would be better than a stroller. Some places are not stroller friendly, even to single umbrella strollers. Is the IN board still active? Maybe try there?

  • That's kind of a tossup...I'd probably think about how long your outings are going to be and whether you can stand to lose the "stuff carrying space" from the double stroller. We are getting ready to take off on a roadtrip and while we don't really have the space for the double, we're ultimately taking it so that we can haul stuff.

I havent been on any trips as far as that but when we were in Florida we found umbrellas were the way to go, quick fold up, light weight, not to worry about damage on airplane, much easier to maneuver in airport...if you will always have help I would go for 2 single umbrellas, maybe with a little pouch or basket underneath for storage....we hung their little backpacks on the back of each with diapers, snacks, toys etc for each.
  • We've done a few trips with our twins (21 months now) overseas and I think if you can do the two single umbrella strollers than that is great. The only thing I would mention is that if you have a fair amount of luggage (or anything that you each need to roll, car seats, etc.) then a cheap double stroller might be good so that one of you can roll the kids and the other can focus on luggage, car seats (if you are bring them), etc. (we packed it all on a trolley @ airport for my husband to roll and I handled the kids in the double stroller).

Also, I would recommend packing extra clothes not only for the kids but also yourselves for the plane ride.  I've had a few accidents on our flights and had clothes for the kids, but not myself which was a pain!  Lots of snacks and things to keep them busy!  Hopefully you get an overnight flight so they can sleep a bit :)

    Good luck with the trip!
