Homeschooling

Intro

Hello!

I have felt called/ compelled to homeschool since the birth of our first son.  He is currently 3 and I have been doing a lot of research on home schooling.  I also did a lot of research on public education and how it is geared more for girls.  We have a VERY active little boy and I know that he is going to need a lot of hands on learning because he doesn't sit still for very long!!

I am SO HAPPY that the bump has this board!!!!  I have already learned a bunch just reading thru a few posts!

I am going to start doing Pre-K activities with Jack in August.  Any recommendations for curriculum for active little boys?  I am looking for something that will grow with him  We don't necessarily need curriculum for Pre-K......

  • Hi! Welcome! I have a very active "high spirited" four year old girl. I recommend as much outside learning as possible. We are looking at My Fathers world curriculum. I know others on this board love it.

  • Welcome! I'm new as well. I don't know how much help I'll be with your question since I haven't technically started homeschooling yet but I do have a somewhat active 4 yr old daughter. I'm planning to use the Letter of the Week curriculum which I tweaked to include extra, hands on activities so she wouldn't get bored with just sit down, worksheets. The great thing about homeschooling is that you know your child best and you can switch up or adapt a curriculum to best fit your child's needs or preferences.

  • Have you checked out Pinterest?  There are a ton of hands on learning ideas on there.  My boys have a lot of energy, too.  I found that they do well with turning things into games.  For example, we are working on numbers 1-10 right now, and stuck after 5.  So I wrote down each number on a separate index card and we time how long it takes him to put the numbers in order.  Then we challenge him to "beat his best time"  We do things like that a lot.  Sometimes we place the numbers around the room and run to the number I call out.  I plan to do similar things with letters next school year, too.  It's more fun for him and that's my goal.  I want him to view learning as something fun instead of boring work (although I realize it has to be boring work sometimes...)

  • I have two little girls so I'm no help with your little boy.  However, I wanted to say Welcome to the board!
