Tricks to get LO to take medicine?

DD is not quite 4 months old and takes Zantac 2 times a day. Up until recently, I could get her to take it with no problem by sticking the syringe in next to the bottle while she was eating and squirting it in. She didn't even seem to notice. Now she definitely does and will spit it out every single time!

The binkie thing that you put medicine in will not work with DD because she refuses any other binkie except the soothie type ones and won't even drink out of bottles with that shaped nipple.

I thought about mixing it with an oz or so of apple juice and seeing if that would work but didn't want to mess with her bowel movements and wasn't sure if it would be ok for her to get the juice twice a day, everyday. What do you do to get your LO to take medicine?

  • I've been putting it in her bottles but she doesn't always eat it all.

oh I have an oinker and he has never not finished a bottle lol. Maybe try fixing an oz or so to begin with to make sure it goes down. Then the rest of a bottle after? Unless your pedi gives you the ok for juice. My LO gets juice every other day usually to help with bowel movements.

  • My son likes to suck either his own thumb or mine/DHs if he can get it, so we put a thumb in his mouth to encourage sucking then put the syringe in around that. I wouldn't use apple juice for a baby this little. They're not supposed to have anything but formula or breastmilk at this age and even if they've started some solids, they should not have juice for a while yet (my older two were well over a year before getting a splash of juice as a once in a while treat and will never get it daily since I don't drink sugary drinks daily).

  • You could try sliding the syringe in next to the pacifier she likes while she's sucking on it. Or squirt it into the pocket of her cheek. You can also blow in their face real hard to make them swallow. These were all possibilities suggested to me by nurses when my daughter was in the hospital. What works best for us is to administer only one ml at a time. It takes a while, but she doesn't spit it out that way. I feel your pain. I have to give my daughter five doses of medicine plus vitamin d every day!
  • Stick a skinny syringe down to the back of the cheek, and slowly squirt it in.  Or, since LO likes the soothies, poke a hole in the tip and add the medicine in the other end and see if LO will suck it down that way.  Of course, you will only be able to use that one for meds only, since it'll be compromised for routine use.

ETA - Zantac is mint flavored and I think it's pretty strong for LO's, so I'm not sure how it would go down in apple juice or other flavors.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • We mix her Prevacid with an equal amount of pedi lite and give it in a bottle. We tried a number of the other options mentioned previously and were unsuccessful.
