Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Making your own baby food...

So I really want to make my son's baby food.  I just feel like it's much healthier than store bought food which will have preservatives in it to ensure shelf life.  I have found an awesome website with lots of information on homemade baby food, for those of you that are also interested & want more information. www.wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com

But for those mom's that already do homemade baby food, what machine do you use? Food processor or immersion blender? Which is best? I really want something that is easy to clean! :) Thanks in advance!

I also use the wholesomebabyfood website, love it! I use an immersion blender and it works just fine. I contemplated going out and buying a new blender or the baby bullet, but rather than spend the money on something new decided to use what I already had. Also it's easier to clean than trying to get down into a blender! Good luck :)

  • I made DS#1 baby food; I have a bullet. I would just steam the fruits/veggies on the stove and then puree it in the bullet. I found that freezing/thawing was more work than just making fresh what I needed for the next few days. It's super easy to do, saves money and is better for the kids!

  • I love wholesomebabyfood also.

I just used my blender - no need to buy something else just for baby food. We blended the food, poured in ice cube trays, froze and then stored in ziploc bags.

Here is an article I wrote about it for a mama website I write for:

  • I used a food processor or immersion blender - just depended which was easier. Like, if I was cooking something in a pot, like pears, I would use the immersion blender. If I was roasting something in the oven like squash, I would use the food processor.
  • I make all of our baby food for our DD, and I also use that site.

I just use my food processer. It's super duper easy to clean. I just toss it in the dish washer when done.

I'd also like to add, for those on the fence of making their own baby food, I made about a months worth of food for under $3.00.

  • Thanks for all of the replies! :)

Do any of you use the pouches for on the go? (Like the Infantino Fresh Squeeze Station)  If so, do you like them/recommend them?

And...when you make things like apples or bananas, do they turn brown and taste different? Should I add something to them to keep them from doing this, or is it ok?

    Thanks again! :)

I used an immersion blender and I liked the pouches for convenience.

when giving bananas I just mashed and served, never stored them after peeling because they would brown.  And instead of pur?eing apples I used natural applesauce. Hth!

    Thank you! :)

I have the Baby Breza and I love it! I know it is not necessary but it makes it really easy because it steams and purees with the push of a button.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • How do you make a whole months worth for so little money?!?

I have been on the fence about making our own and am super curious about the process and logistics of it. Guess I will have to check out this website.

The wholesome baby food website is awesome! It has lots of great information. My son is eating rice cereal right now.  I am making it homemade.  It's not hard at all.  Just takes more time than dumping it out of a box.  But, it is much healthier for them.  I tried to freeze some though & the texture changed and it clumped up.
