Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby cereal question

I was wondering when you all started your baby on cereal.. My son is 4.5 months old and weighs 15lbs 3oz I am thinking of starting him on some cereal. Was wondering how old your baby was when you started and did your baby have any reactions? Did they like it? Hate it? Sleep better? Gain weight faster? Just curious!!

I didn't. I started both mine on regular food around 7 months. I think one started with avocado and one with sweet potato.

Rice cereal doesn't have any redeeming value and many pedis recommend skipping it in favor of something that has nutritional value, and most suggest waiting until 6 months. Rice cereal does not help babies sleep (that's a myth) and won't help them gaining weight since 100% of baby's nutrition is meant to come from breastmilk or formula for the first year.

    So now, I wouldn't.

  • I would consult your Pedi before starting any solids before 6 mo. They can best advise you on what you should try.

  • My son will be 4 months in a few days & only weighs 11lbs 12oz.  Our pediatrician recommended starting rice cereal.  I breastfeed & after researching, I had decided that I was not going to introduce cereal until 5 or 6 months.  However, I am going back to work & want him to be use to eating the cereal (knowing how to eat it) once I go back.  So my MIL & grandma don't have to fight with him.  (He gets frustrated easily.  No patience. Haha)

Anywho....I have started on rice cereal.  I only give him 1/2 tbs mixed with breast milk once a day.  I use organic brown rice.  He hasn't had any reactions. But does love eating it!  Here's a good website with lots of info. about how & when to introduce solids.

  • Our pedi told us 4 mos. But LO hates it, tried rice and oatmeal.. we gave him some green beans and he loved them. So it looks like we are skipping cereal.

ditto this. I plan to skip cereal and start with vegetables when DS is about 6 months/exhibits readiness.

I started a few days before his 5mo bday. We did rice cereal for a week, now on oatmeal for this week and I'm going to give him avocado this weekend. If you want to skip cereal go right to avocado that's supposed to be the best. I wanted to go as long as possible but DS was so ready for solids so we
Made it to 5mos. Check with ur pedi tho bc everyone is different !
  • We skipped cereal and went straight to baby food. [and gasp! Yes our pedi approves baby food before 6 months!]

I did this with both my boys, just started with DS2.

  • LO hates cereal so I've been mixing carrots in with it to flavour it. Just this last week we started successfully with the added flavour.
