Medela Pump In Style Advanced...

Hello, I'm 27 weeks pregnant and a family member recently dropped off a Medela Pump In Style Advance breast pump. She said she found it at a garage sale for $50 and couldn't pass it up because it's a $300+ pump. I was extremely thankful because I'm definitely not in a financial position to purchase this nice of a pump but I want to breast feed very badly. I got to thinking about it though and I'm worried about using it...I could never forgive myself if my little one got some sort of illness or disease because I pumped with a used breast pump. I've been researching it and it seems like it's really divided on whether it should be done or not. I'd just like to know your guys' input. I'm also going to ask my doctor at my next appointment to see what his opinion is too.

  • As PP have said, it is not a closed system, I wouldn't use it! Insurance should cover it now with the Affordable Care Act.  Not sure to what extent or how much it varies but mine is covered 100% for one of that price.

The PISA is an open system pump, so no, a used one should not be used. However, 1 you don't need a pump for successful breastfeeding unless/until you return to work and if you do need one in the early days, ti should be a hospital grade rental, not a PISA, and 2 your insurance may cover the purchase/rental of a pump.

Yes! Also check with your hospital. I was sent home with a hand pump at no charge.
