When did your LOs start sitting up? DS is 6.5 months and isn't sitting by himself yet. He can sit if he leans over and puts his hands on the ground, but he loses balance easily. Whenever I try to sit him up and sit behind him for support, he wiggles down so he can lay back down. He just doesn't seem to be interested in sitting. He'd rather roll around or lay on his back and play with his feet. At his 6 month appointment, the pedi mentioned that sitting is a 6 month milestone and to work on strengthening his core, but didn't seem overly concerned. I, however, am worried! He's met all his other milestones, so maybe I'm overreacting. Thanks, ladies!
Re: XP: LO sitting
Don't stress yourself out over this! My DD turned 8 months on the 2nd and she only just started sitting by herself something like a week or 2 ago. Now, she was 6 weeks early, so she may be behind a little bit but I'm not worried. My oldest DD was about 7 months or so when she started sitting on her own. They all go at their own pace and trust me, it's not on their job/college applications when they did all their milestones! Think about it this way, you can keep him a baby just a little bit longer-that stage goes by so quick! Don't rush him, he'll get there all on his own! It seemed like my baby DD just did it all of a sudden, she just one day could sit by herself. Good luck! :-)
My DS is 6.5 months and is finally, within the past few days, starting to sit pretty well unassisted. He will still fall to the side or back sometimes, especially after he gets tired, although tonight he sat on the couch for like an hour playing with DD without any falling over.
It sounds like your LO is very close to this -- what you have described is what my DS was doing like last week.
Leaning on hands for support is totally fine -- that is still considered sitting up without support (support means external, like a Boppy). The throwing himself back or to the side will self-correct once he gets the hang of pulling himself straight...like my DS just this week starting doing mini-situps when lying semi-reclined and pulling himself into a sit using his stomach muscles, and once he started doing that, he stopped toppling over as easily.
Give it literally another week or two.
Also I should mention that gross motor is the least important of all the milestones and also has huge variation...and being a couple weeks, or even a couple months, "behind" in gross motor is absolutely no reason for concern. Your child is just fine. My DD could not sit up until 9 months and didn't walk until 20 months, but she is totally healthy and normal and is now 28 months old and equal to her age mates in everything.

Calm down, mama. Every baby is different.
DS started sitting up a week after he turned 6 months. I had tried helping him sit up before that but he usually had very little interest. I would put 2 Boppy's on top of each other and sit him inside of them and then one day (actually the day we were doing his 6 months pictures, how perfect!!) he could do it by himself.
