NYC Daycare/Nanny Help

Hello All!

 I just finished my first trimester and I am feeling great but am having horrible stress and anxiety about what we will do about childcare when our baby comes.  We live in Harlem and my husband and I both work full time (M-F, 9-6 and sometimes longer).  I am having a really hard to time figuring out where to even start looking and even more concern about how much it is going to cost?  Can anyone reccommend some tips of where and when we should start looking?  Or any insight on how much daycare and or nannys typically cost?

 Any help is greatly appreciated!

Look for a listserv near you.  I know Harlem has at least one parents listserv - I think they're with Yahoo?  I'd figure at least $15/hr.  If you look up the Park Slope Parents website, they have a nanny pay survey, and that'll give you an idea.  I think it's comparable in Harlem.

Try contacting a Nanny Agency. They do thorough background checks and interview them before sending them to you for interviews. I know Abigail Madison is a popular one.

Costs vary - an in-home provider may be $800-$900 a month, a regular facility that just watches them can cost $1800 a month, while the curriculum based franchises cost $3000+. You also need to determine how much you can afford for care. Day care is expensive to begin with but is moreso for infants, so be prepared for that as well. Also know that most facilities don't take children under 2 years old, less take 6 month old babies and even less take 6 week olds so I would start looking now.

You can start with the nyc.gov website and search for day care providers. They provide names and addresses, as well as when they were last reviewed by the city and if they have a valid licence (always!!! make sure they are licensed). Then I recommend you walk around your area and visit all of the day care facilities you can. Also ask your neighbors... I found the best recommendations are from word of mouth. Its tough so hang in there

Also, if its nearby stop by the Adam Clayton Powell Jr building. .. federal buildings usually have day care facilities in them and the cost can be subsidized.

I was a nanny and I would say someone who is out of college and really good with children. I was also a house keep but now im looking for a nanny as well got to work : ) Try Care.com Its a great place to to start and they will find people to fit your criteria.
