TTC After a Loss

Flax Seed?

So I was making my usual daily fruit smoothie for breakfast and was absentmindedly perusing the back of my flax seed bag- on the very bottom in tiny letters it said "if pregnant or breastfeeding please consult a physician before use."

has any one ever heard of this before?!? So I Dr. googled it and found a bunch of things that were pretty much along these lines

 "HORMONAL EFFECTS

Flaxseeds may act like the hormone estrogen in your body and can stimulate menstruation and contractions. This can be very dangerous during pregnancy, especially in early pregnancy. Drugs.com also states that flaxseeds may directly harm a human fetus and recommends avoiding them completely."

WTF?! I have a serving of flax seed on the daily how did I never know this? I guess I never thought of flax seed as a supplement so I never mentioned it, it's got all that fiber and omega-3s. I'm sort of broken up about it because I'm now convinced it caused our chemicals which I know is sort of nuts but it doesn't seem unreasonable that it could be a contributing factor right? Ugh. I feel like an idiot.

interesting! I guess I'm going to have to call my RE about it. I'm trying to have the attitude that its not like I'm dousing everything I eat in it...

Interesting! I have granola with flax in my yogurt. I hope this didn't cause my chemicals.

It takes a fair amount of them to impact milk production. Worth asking the RE about, but likely not the cause of a cp or the like.

  • Interesting! Like PP, I'm sure the spoonful in your daily smoothie isn't going to cause harm.

I like to remind myself in moments like this that crackheads, smokers and alcoholics have healthy babies and that although no one recommends doing any of the above drugs while pregnant, I'm sure the negative effects of flax seed are not going to affect TTC. Worth mentioning everything to the RE to get their advice though!

  • I have flax seed daily as well! Yikes! I did some research and I am getting mixed reviews. There does not seem to be a definitive answer. Hmmmmm
  • I only recently discovered how awesome flax seed is, but that was after my loss. I was aware that I was not to have it while pregnant. It really wasnt an issue for me when I was pregnant because I didnt use flax seed. Now that it is part of my morning smoothie, I dont know how I will give it up! When we went for our first OBGYN appt, my doctor specifically listed it as something not to consume, but he did not elaborate on.
