Crib Transition fail.....

Ugh.

We started LO in her crib three nights ago.

Night number 1 went well. 6 hour stretch, a little trouble getting her back down but nothing huge....but this was also the same night as her epic meltdown for my mom, so no doubt she was exhausted.
Night 2 was a total disaster. We had taken her to a local carnival and fireworks show and by the time we got home she was totally over stimulated. It took me an hour and a half to get her down, she stayed down for a half hour before fussing for the first time. Got her up and back down and she cried again an hour later. This time I put her back in her bassinette and she also cried an hour later. She would up going back down in her RNP after that. Horrible night all around again I chalked it up to the overstimulation!

Last night really wasn't any better. She went down at her normal time but proceeded to wake up every hour for four straight hours. Finally I tried her back in her bassinette and she slept for 4.5 hours.

I am very frustrated with this process.
She's moving from bassinette to crib, so sleeping on her back is not an issue. She seems uncomfortable in the bassinette which was the driving force for me to make the transition, yet she seems lost in the huge crib....she had napped their a few times, and even when she wouldn't sleep, she laid their happily....now it's all a battle. Even more frustrating because I really feel that since we hit the 12 week mark it's been nothing but sleep woes in this house.

Anyone have crib transition tips!?!?!? Please help!!!!!! I really feel like I need to tough this out at night with her but I am way too tired to be up every hour!
ETA: by tough it out I mean keep putting her back down in crib, not leaving here there and making her try to get herself back down!

Re: Crib Transition fail.....

  • Is the RNP, bassinet, and crib all in the same room or is the crib in her room and the RNP and bassinet in yours?

  • She has a sleep sheep in her crib with her that plays white noise and she gets the same pajamas as always and swaddled in her AA blanket, just like she did in the bassinet. When she wakes up, she will typically fall back to sleep if I hold her, and it's pretty quick, but then up again an hour later. Maddening.

The only thing I've wondered is if she could be cold. The AC vent in her room is the most powerful in the house..... But I'm putting her to bed in long sleeve, footed pajamas so I have a hard time thinking that's an issue.

Ducky she's 15 weeks now.....but when she turned 12, her sleep became a lot more inconsistent, that's why I referenced that!

You could be approaching the 4 month wakeful.

That's my guess. FX it passed quickly. Of course I always recommend Merlin's magic sleep suit too, it's a miracle.

So if the crib is her first time in her own room you could try putting her bassinet in her room for a few nights to get her used to the room in something she is used to sleeping in. Then mover her to the crib. Right now K&A are in the PNP in our room. When we transition them I plan to put the PNP in their room next to the crib first and then move them to the crib. It is actually better for sleep if the room is a bit colder - I think 68-72 degrees so as long as LO is in long footed PJs and a swaddle I wouldn't worry. It could be the four month wakeful but that would be a huge coincidence if it started the same exact time you tried to move LO to the crib.

  • I have no advice. However, I can probably make you feel better.

J is still in her bassinet. I just took her out of the swaddle last week. At her first wake up, she ends up in bed with us because I fall asleep nursing her. I should add that J is 6.5 mo.

I need my sleep, so I do what works for us. I haven't even tried a crib transition because I havent gotten around to ordering one.

JB, you know I feel your pain. Our great sleeper fell apart at 15 weeks and week 17 was the worst...identical to what you're describing. Last 3 nights have been best ones of his life though. It will get better, I promise! It is awful in the middle though. Just take pride on surviving each might for now...

This may be my favorite response!

And don't feel bad. Friday night - I took her into bed with me and let her sleep on me, twice. I did not even try to get her back down because I was so unbelievably exhausted. In fact, truthfully - I enjoyed the snuggles :)

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies.

Another painful night last night. Went down easily at 845 - and slept until 11, from there it was up every hour, and for the third night in a row I pulled the plug and put her in the bassinet.

I am so over this.  I really don't think this is the 4 month wakeful period though - b/c she goes back down pretty quickly. And she's been much better when she's in the bassinet.

Perhaps I will try the suggestion of putting the bassinet in her room.  I don't know - part of me just thinks I should muscle through it and keep getting up at night and helping her go back down - in her crib, but I am simply way too tired.

    UGH.
