Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

CIO?

Dd is 20 months. Took paci five days ago. She's done great til last two nights. She's fine as long as I'm in the room. If I leave she starts crying. I know she's not comfortable w the lack of paci but when do I start tough love of CIO? She has her blanket, music, seahorse, and her teddy bear.

  • Really that is your call, If it were us... I would prob do the same version of Ferber as we did when DS was 8 months and we sleep trained.... only lasted a few days for him until he slept great. As for our binky use.... I have no issues having him use it for nap time and sleep time. We started limiting it during the day and he goes for his fingers.... my fear is he will start sucking his thumb/fingers at night and make it a habit, which is harder to break...

    Well I started Ferber last night and three hours later everyone was asleep. Paci had to go... She's showing a slight speech delay and I notice her teeth are moving. For me I had to make sur the paci was not hurting her speech . Long nights ahead;

  • If I were in your shoes I would not care about LO having a paci during sleep times, DD still does and I have no plans of taking it away. She occasionally has it during the day too, definitely no where close to all the time. I don't see any need to stop this.

  • Do you mean it took 3 hrs for for your LO to get to sleep!? That is a long time for crying even if it is on and off.. in my opinion. On that note, having a paci for night time will not cause speech delays and should not cause movement of the teeth. We are working with a speech therapist and I was informed that night and bed time is ok.... limiting it during the day when they are up and should be talking is key. I was a dental hygienist at a pediatric dental office and it takes a lot more use of a paci or thumb sucking then just night time to cause movement and issues (even then you see it more in 3 and 4 yr olds still using a paci or thumb), at 20 months the mouth is growing and teeth are still coming in and making space, there will be movement but that movement is normal.... but if it was right for you to get rid of it then great and I am glad it is going well.

    Yep. Agree all the way. Its not true at all that speech delay is caused by a pacifier.

    My DD is almost 16 months and we pulled the paci on the 4th of July.   She fought bedtime to no end...we did 5 or 6 nights of this horrible 2 hour bedtime routine of holding and reading until she went to sleep because she cried everytime we put her in her crib.  Finally, DH and I were so tired of that we did let her CIO.  The first night was awful - 45 minutes of her crying.  But, every nap and bedtime after that has been 15 minutes or less of crying/fussing.  It seems to get less and less each day.  Generally, I am not a fan of CIO, but we felt DD was old enough and that we had taken care of all her needs at that point.  Good luck to you!

    ETA:  If she did great the first three nights, is it possible that something else was going on the last two?  Teething or not feeling well?  It does get better and we are glad that we got rid of the paci.  Our pedi wanted us to do it by 12 months, so we were a little late.
