Hi i had an idea for a little side money. Didnt know what other moms, working or sah thought. I know alot of working moms /or sah moms dont have the time to prepare clothing and /or deliver to consignment shops. I have the time and vehicle to do both. The feedback from a few of my friends said they would like that option. I know you all are busy with your lives but would greatly appreciate honest opinions before i try this! i googled the subject and cant find anything on this idea. hopefully yall will help me : Thanks for your time and consideration:

I personally wouldn't pay for that b/c I tend to give clothes to friends or just donate it...I would consider having a variety of 'personal assistant' services maybe in the same vein that would save ppl time...?

I wouldn't bother to use those services. It is already bad enough that the shop takes a cut. But then a driver? Not worth the pennies I would make. I would rather donate it.

Not a horrible idea, but I agree with pp's. It is honestly a better return on my money to donate for me than to consign. And honestly, Huntsville - I really don't see it working there. Maybe, maybe in a large city where there is a lot of money like NYC or something where people are accustomed to farming out things like that but not in Huntsville. 

I think these types of ideas are usually more effort than the return. You should probably just get a job. IMHO....

TO follow on the others - I don't see taking my own stuff to consignment stores as a way to really make money.  To then pay someone else to do it for me?  At some point, it kind of all becomes pointless.

Now, granted, I have no idea how much the shop takes.  Then how much you'd want on top of that.  Depending on that, I MIGHT change my mind.

But still...

As someone that lives in an area with consignment shops full of Chanel it's not really worth it to pay someone. I could see this working for a celebrity that has an entire closet of clothes to give away.

Not something I would pay for.  It it wouldn't matter where I lived in the country.  I am not going to let someone else take a cut of my $7 that I may make off a consignment shop.

I wouldn't pay for this either. When I think of things I outsource like Housecleaners or gardener, those are things that take me hours to do, so it's worth the money to me. It takes me literally a few minutes to dump clothes in a bag and donate them. Plus I write them off at tax time.

However, I agree with pp who suggested that there might be a better market for other "personal assistant" type services, though.  Maybe errand running like dry cleaning, taking the car to be serviced/cleaned, grocery shopping, etc.

I think it would be great, if reasonable in price and easy to use. I have a ton of stuff that I "should" consign but I never get around to doing it.

This is what I was thinking also - a wider array of personal assistant services that included more regular types of errand running I think would more likely be of interest.  And while Huntsville has high income levels for a city of its size, it probably doesn't have the critical mass to really do a lucrative business of something like this.

And in-house laundry help, that would be huge. I have a great cleaning lady who will sometimes fold my laundry if she finds it sitting in the basket.  But what I would give to convince her to run a load or two, hang, and put them away while she's at it.  And my baby hasn't even arrived yet, so can't imagine how much more I'll wish for it then!

I have purses (no where near as expensive as PP) that I really like, however the strap's edge coating is coming off ... have yet to figure out what to do with those purses since they're wonderful purses otherwise. If someone could fix that for me, would pay, but would have to cost under 10 dollars per purse to seem worth the additional investment since the purses were 20 to 40 each to begin with.

There is a mom in my area that advertises with my mom's group about being a personal organizer. She will also do grocherie shopping and related errands. In a surburban area 40ish miles south of San Francisco.

Realistic, how many times a year do people do that? Give stuff to consignment. Unless you have a huge client base it would not be worth it I don't think. And non profits like Purple Heart already come to your house to pick the stuff up so I don't think people would be willing to pay for it.

This, how much would you charge to wash and deliver clothing? I can't imagine this will be a huge "money maker"... maybe I'm just too cheap

If you have a JBF sale in your area, they pay people for something similar.  People consign large amounts of clothes at a time (thousands of pieces) and you wash, iron, hang, and tag all the clothes for them.  I have no idea what they pay for that, but a lot of people around here use it because it's so time consuming to do what JBF wants in order to sell them.  I don't personally, but I don't mind tagging my own and am not so picky about having them ironed.  You might google "Just Between Friends Sale" and see if the one near you needs people.

 That's why I finally upgraded to Coach- I was sick of falling in love with $20 purses and having them fall apart in a couple of months or less.  I save money by having a higher quality purse that can withstand a beating from me.

What are you doing to your purses? I have several cheap purses that are 10+ years old! A lot of them have even been through the washing machine a couple of times. On the flip side- I finally broke down and bought a small coach bag and the stupid zipper has broken 3 times on it. I'm not over stuffing it or anything. I got tired of sending it back in for repair multiple times, so I'm done with coach!

Same goes for moms of multiples sales, some cities have really huge ones and the amount of time & effort that goes into tagging, etc accdg to their rules was always a major reason I never participated...now, you don't actually make a ton o n them so I really have no idea how much ppl would be willing to pay for that service, your hourly rate would probably end up pretty abysmal.

There are multiple JBFs in different parts of the Houston area, which is near Huntsville.

I would think maybe a cloth diaper service would be a better idea. I mean, purple heart picks up for free and so does salvation army. But perhaps if you can get in with the JBF organization it would work.
