weight gain

I'm a runner, but I'm also a pregnant runner.  Right now I'm 20 weeks and have continued to stay active 6 days a week.  The problem is, is that I'm still gaining weight really rapidly.  I've already gained 20 pounds (not water weight, I'm not puffy at all) and have been trying not to gain more than the recommended 25-30 pounds.  Looks like I'm destined to not meet that goal. How much weight did you all gain during a physically active pregnancy?  Seems like something's off to me.

Re: weight gain

  • My first two pregnancies I was very active. Gained 55lbs the first and about 40 the second. My starting weight was around 125. My OB never commented on the gain. The majority of weight came off within about 34 months, but those last 8ish lbs were rough! I'm now prego w my 3rd, surprise! I'm 16 wks and already 16 lbs up. Started at 122. Nowhere near as active as before, and a LOT more weight consious. I'm trying to stay positive and healthy. It's a lot harder these days! You're half way there!!! Keep doing what works for you and stay positive. Each woman is different. I compare myself all of the time, but no one else is exactly like me... So it's just setting myself up for defeat. Let's work to enjoy this time. It's tough enough as it is just being pregnant!!!

  • I wasn't a runner, but I walked daily during pregnancy and gained 30. I was 165 to begin with and my doc only wanted me to gain like 15 or 20. Maybe your body is holding on to more weight because of the running? Just a guess.

I was that way.  I think I gained close to 10 lbs in the first tri, then it slowed down, especially by the third.  In all I gained 26 lbs (but gave birth a month early).  I was very active and a vegan the whole time.  Most of the weight came off in the first two weeks, and slowly continuing to come off (couple more pounds to go!).

Not everyone follows the same pattern - I'm on my 3rd pregnancy and its been different all three. I delivered at similar weights both previous times and I think I will this time. Watch your eating though, heavy exercise results in a hearty appetite at least for me. I do have to watch my intake more than I'd like to. Hunger can lead to bad decisions or too much food!
  • I had an active pregnancy. I was a runner before getting pregnant. Then I got pregnant and was hit it horrific morning sickness and was medicated for it. The doctor instructed me that my heart rate should not go over 130 during the first trimester so running was out of the question for me. In addition due to my morning sickness I could only need carby foods. I began to walk uphill on treadmill instead of running and ended up gaining 10 or 12 lbs during the first trimester. The weight slowed down in 2nd trimester and 3rd when i was able to increase my activity levels but I still had some high weight gain weeks. All in all I gained 33lbs and had my baby girl at 38w5d.
  • Hey, I feel you. I was very active pre pregnancy and have gained a lot in the first trimester. I am now 22 weeks and have started to level off I think.
I gained 10 in the first trimester and 5 from week 1620 and none since. For a total of 15. I was 150 pre pregnancy but am 5'9 and and now 165. I don't think being super active has anything to do with how our bodies deal with pregnancies. We are all different. Hopefully we stay in a healthy weight range! Good luck!
  • try not to worry about it, there is really nothing you can do.  I gained double what they recommend and everyone was healthy.

  • I wasn't a runner but stayed active through both pregnancies. Despite have itty bitty babies I gained about 30 before delivering my first at 36 weeks and gained 40+ before delivering DD2 at 39 weeks. (probably closer to 45 lbs.) With DD1 I had lost all but 3-5lbs by 4 months, with DD2 I'm hoping to be a few pounds from pre-pg weight by 6 months. I'm about 6 lbs up right now but I've buckled down and I'm losing it faster now.
  • Only ran thru beginning of 2nd trip with first pregnancy and gained 40lbs but was still very active with cross training at the gym. Lost the weight really quick...within 2 months and was back to running 5 weeks postpartum.

This pregnancy, I have ran throughout and still doing up to 4 miles 3 days per week but looks like I'm gaining a little less at 28lbs thus far.

You will hit growth spurts with more gain then go weeks where you don't gain. I didn't gain any weight the last 6 weeks of my 1st pregnancy so don't worry. Stay active...eat healthy and everything will be fine.

  • Good job on being active!  I had to stop running at 9 weeks because of sciatica, and I hate the laziness I feel as a result.  I still walk and swim, but I miss my running!

I'm just shy of 29 weeks and have gained 10 lbs, but that's below normal since I started at a healthy weight.  Everyone gains a little differently.  I'd talk to your doctor and see their input.  Also, you could look at following a GD diet if you want to slow your weight gain.
