Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DD in new room and upset

DD is still in a crib but on Wed we moved her from the very small nursery to a larger bedroom.  We moved all her familiar items but it is bigger, lighter (more windows) and just different.  She has had a hard time sleeping and wakes crying and such. So she's now overtired and has a cold so it is just a mess. We spend time in her room reading etc and talk about it excitedly and I just hope in a few more days she will be back on track.  I know change for toddlers is hard and while she is a pretty laid back little girl I know she is a creature of habit -- heck I have a hard time sleeping in strange places so I can't blame her but wonder if I can do anything else to help her.

Re: DD in new room and upset

  • We did the exact same thing for DD a couple of months ago. Is your DD still looking at the same objects she was in her old room when she is in her crib? DD was used to looking at her dresser from her crib, and the dresser in her new room is across from her crib again. Is there a huge difference in decoration or paint color from her old room to her new room? Maybe something as small as that is throwing her off.

Oh! I almost forgot, we draped a blanket over the crib rail so she looked at that instead of outside the crib for a week or two (I still drape it over for routine, but she isn't bothered if it falls or whatever). I thought that making her feel a little more enclosed in her crib would help her feel cozy in the bigger space. Maybe weird on my part, but it made me feel better. ;-) Maybe the light is bothering her too? Have you gotten drapes for the room yet?

DD transitioned perfectly, so I hope those suggestions are helpful. I am also assuming everything that was in her crib is still in there (for us, we have a couple stuffed animals, her seahorse and her blanket).

  • Thanks for reply. Yes the room and rug colors are different. We do have blackout blinds and curtain panels but it is still a bit brighter than old room. She does look at changing table (as she did in old room) but also one of two windows -- there is no other option for crib placement due to windows/doors etc. We tried to have all her familiar things in sight and we try to spend non-sleep time in there as well to help it feel comfortable.

She is sick and may have molars so that could be making it worse than would otherwise be as well.

I could try the blanket idea (I have a piece of fleece that is familiar from her old room)
