2nd Trimester

Low-Lying Placenta

On Monday the ultrasound tech discovered at my 2nd trimester anatomy scan that I have a "low-lying placenta". Being an EMT, I instantly knew that this could turn into placenta previa if my placenta doesn't move up over the next few weeks. I'm totally freaked. Has anyone else had this in any of their previous pregnancies and did it resolve? If not, what options were you given as far as continuing work/bed-rest/etc.?

my placenta was lying low at my 20week ultrasound, I am going in for a third ultrasound on tuesday to see if it has moved, I will let you know what the outcome is once I know.

Sorry, lurking from 1st tri here...

I had a lowlying placenta with my first pregnancy. I had a few extra vaginal u/s to check and make sure it moved, but otherwise nothing different. I remained pretty active and didn't have trouble with it.

  • Thanks ladies. The doctor is concerned because of how close it already is. Only about 2cm away. They said they are hoping it moves up. Since this has been the pregnancy from hell compared to when I was pregnant with my son, I'm hoping this one thing goes my way.

  • Same thing with baby 2. It made me spot alot though. They said worse case I would have to have a csection. It did move up in a couple weeks and I had a vaginal delivery as planned.

@ 20 weeks my placenta was at 2.5cm, now at 29weeks it is at 2.8cm. The technician said she could do a vaginal ultrasound to see exact measurements, but she doesn't like to do a vaginal unless absolutely necessary. She said my OB will send me for another ultrasound @ 34/35 weeks and they will wait to decide on the c-section then.
  • I'm 15 weeks and have the same thing - not covering the cervix but just adjacent. I've been having some spotting, possibly as a result, maybe from the cervix. I'm on pelvic rest (no sex/penetration, walking only) just to be cautious. My doc said she was 90% confident that the placenta would move up, since the uterus tends to inflate like a balloon from the base upward. In addition, she said that if it's less than 2 cm they usually schedule a c-section, less than 3 they would proceed vaginally but have an OB on hand in case of complications (my doctor is a family physician so would not perform a c-section if needed).

Best of luck! I don't think you should worry too much, especially if you haven't had any bleeding. Better to stay relaxed and positive since that's all you have control of! (or at least that's what I'm trying to do...).
