GD Mamas - questions about growth

I had my first growth u/s at 34 weeks. LO was 4 lbs. 12 or  13oz? Somewhere in the 33rd percentile. Today at the 36 week u/s he was 5.5 lbs and in the 18th percentile. They tested the cord and saw that it was free flowing so they are assuming he's getting all the nutrients he needs. They didnt seem concerned that he dropped in the percentiles, so I know I shouldn't either. But..... you know how a FTM's mind works. I was just assuming we were going to be told that he was large since my GD has to be managed by insulin and every time I go in they have to up the insulin amounts b/c its not fully in check.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Re: GD Mamas - questions about growth

  • My LO was 6lbs14oz at birth and I had GD as well. The thing is the u/s are great, but the measurements can be off by a bit depending on baby's position and many other things. They had guessed my DD was 8 or 9 lbs, but warned me they could be off in either direction. If it looks like everything else is going as it should and they aren't worried, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Babies change percentiles all the time and having your GD managed helps keep your baby healthy and in the "normal" birth weight range. Sounds like you've done well with managing it.

  • I had a scan around 30 weeks and he was in the 42nd percentile.

I had another scan around 34 weeks and he was in the 24th percentile.

They said they expect he will be 7.5 lbs at birth. I have heard that it can be off as much as 20 percent.

They said that they only worry if he is in the bottom 10% or the top 90%.

My doctor said smaller babies are pretty normal if your fasting numbers are low and you follow the diet. She told me high fasting numbers are the biggest indicator for large babies in her experience.

That's the thing. My fasting numbers keep creeping up. We've increased my insulin twice now. From 16 to 20 to 24. I dont let a ton of fasting numbers be high in between appts but usually there are two or three.

Anyway, I definitely appreciate all your stories and sharing with me your experiences. We are going to keep an eye on it - another fluid check next week and then another growth in two weeks.

  • Try what I am dong to control your fasting numbers. Eat more protein right before bed. I refuse to be put on insulin until I get a chance to control my levels myself. The fasting level depends a lot on what you have before bed. I have been trying out different things to get mine down and it has worked! :)
  • At my 34 week scan our baby was/is in the 90th percentile.

Since then I have been insulin managed (increasing the dose daily) as all of my fasting numbers were high, and I am hoping that this has helped baby to come down on the percentile range, as are my specialists.
