Taking blood sugar after a snack?

Okay so hopefully I can explain this to where you can understand. So I have to eat 3 meals plus 3 snacks a day. I have to take my blood sugar 2 hours after I eat a meal. But my question is if I decide to have a snack before taking my blood sugar is that okay? Because sometimes I want my snack about an hour after I eat a meal. I was just curious if it would make my readings skewed or if it doesn't matter. I know my dietician said if I'm hungry then it's okay to eat.

Re: Taking blood sugar after a snack?

  • I am guessing is skews your reading based on the pure fact that you?re introducing glucose into your blood stream? I try to hold off on my snack until right after my levels. My OB said it would be okay to move my after meal testing up to 1 hour after the meals if I was consistent through the entire process. If you specialist says that?s not possible then you might have to just hold off on your snack.

  • It will skew the test, but by how much will depend on what your snack is and how far ahead of the test you eat it. An hour is definitely enough time for the glucose to be released into your blood. Simple carbs take less than 15 minutes to affect sugar levels. If your dietitian wants you to stick with 2hr tests, try adding in more protein, fiber, or healthy fats to your meal to help you feel satisfied till test time. Of course if you feel shaky or feel that you just have to eat, do so. It's much better to do so in that case.
