When did the YMCA get so expensive?

I went to the Y a lot as a young child. Of course, that was like 20 years ago lol. We have one about 5 minutes away and I was looking at some of their prices for toddler activities and such and they got expensive IMO. Most of their classes that only run for a month to 6 weeks are close to $200. If you are a member, you save like $15, big whoopee. I'm sure since I'm in NY, that is one reason why the prices are so high, but still.

Re: When did the YMCA get so expensive?

  • The activity prices here are not terribly expensive but membership pricing is way overpriced IMO.  We are members because it is my only option for a gym with childcare in the area.  When we lived in an area with a much higher cost of living we belonged to a beautiful, new 24 hour health club with all of the bells and whistles for barely more than what we pay at our crappy Y.  I would gladly pay more for more hours, better equipment and facilities, and better staff but right now I feel like I'm being ripped off.

I think it's great that they have childcare and I would love to join just for that reason, but I'll probably have to wait to join until after I go back to work full time again. DH used to complain paying for my cheap Planet Fitness membership, let alone what I would pay at the Y.

  • I have checked out the Y at a couple of our locations (we have moved a lot) and it is crazy how much membership and class costs change from location to location.  At our first location the membership prices were based on income and it made it very expensive based on DH's income.  Luckily we were not married yet so it was really cheap since I was still a student and had no income.  Where we are in NY the membership is pretty reasonable but the classes are kind of expensive if you are not a member, being a member gets you 1/2 off the price.  Unfortunately we don't live close enough to make being a member worth it IMO.

Every Y I've ever gone to has been expensive.  I think they charge outrageous prices for memberships so they can give away scholarships/reduced/free membership.  When my son starts preschool I'm leaving and going someplace reasonable since I won't be bringing him as often.

We are in Ohio.  Our family membership is $56/month.  We pay $20 for one swim lesson/week; $40 for two.  Other classes are usually $10-15 for each 6-week session.  DS's summer camps cost $85 for a week of 9-4.

  • We are in West Michigan, and our Y is $100/mo.  It's only about two years old, and very very nice.  The childcare room is really nice, and most of the people that work in there are great. (I was pretty meh about the infant room though, and that's part of why we dropped our membership).  I think most of the six week classes are $60-80.  All in all, I think it's worth what you pay for it, at least for our branch.

Where in ny are you? A family membership for 2 adults is 90, plus 100 to join and the price of classes.

Upstate.  A family membership here is $55 and swim lessons are $80, $40 for members.  Oh, and a $75 fee to join but they have had a few specials since we moved here where they waive that fee.

  • We are in NJ and ours is freakin' expensive.

For a basic membership--all it gets you is the ability to register for classes it is 129. A toddler/up to the age 5 is 60. So if I just wanted swim lessons, I could do the child's membership.

A full membership is: 150 to enroll and 65 per month for a family.

Or for a toddler for their classes it is 30 to enroll and 16 per month.

     Plus the classes.

The basic membership registration fee for my daughters class is 135. The full membership is 89.
