Re: Pregnant & TTC After a Preemie Check In 7/11/13

  • I've scheduled an appointment with my doctor (who is the head of high risk at our practice) for July 23 to see what if anything I can do before we start trying next spring/summer.  I also want to talk to her about the chances of everything happening again and how it will be different this time since I won't see them again until I'm pregnant (hopefully).  I'm both excited and terrified.  My son is amazing and doing so well but I'm worried I won't get as lucky next time and worry about him if something happens next time.  So many things I never considered last time.  I'm hopeful that the appointment goes well though and the news is better than what I'm expecting!

ETA- second time moms- what did you ask before you conceived again and is there anything you wish you had asked? (XP question on high risk)

I'm not pregnant again, yet, but I did talk to my OB about TTC again and my chances of having another preemie. She told me that the risk is higher, obviously, but with the p17 shots and extra careful monitoring, the risk lowers to about 30%. So I have a 70% chance of delivering a term baby (if I am lucky enough to get KU again). Although, my preemie came due to PTL; Wasn't yours from Pre-e? Or HELLP? Talking to the doctor is a good way to determine exactly what kind of odds you are looking at. In regards to the check-in. Still TTC here. Just started cycle 3. Cycles are so messed up; it's frustrating!

I'm sure it is frustrating... I am glad that the shots will help you though!!! isn't 30% close to the range for people without a history of PTL?

Your feelings are completely understandable! We went through the same thing and vowed that if MFM said our chances of another preemie were high that we were going to be OAD. Another pregnancy after a preemie is definitely not an easy road to travel, but if you were given the green light and DH is completely supportive and on the same page, I would try. MFM gave us some advice on having number 3 (preventative cerclage at about 12 weeks), but we only wanted 2 kids so we are definitely done. The SBR and my age are huge factors as well (I'm 35).

Our main concerns and what we asked about were the chances of having another preemie (don't remember stats but she said my chances of FT baby were good with P17 shots), making sure we knew cause of preemie #1 (pPROM with no signs of PTL), and the plan for extra monitoring (we were told MFM visits every 2 weeks starting at 12 weeks for cervical checks). DH and I were satisfied with that plan so we went for it.

Good luck with your appt and I will have fingers crossed that you get good news! Keep us updated!

  • Im doing pretty good this week. I have been taking it easy and back to work. Today was DD1's birthday and I took the day off to spend with her and we went out to lunch with DH before he went to work. Yesterday I kept thinking about my labor experience with her and hoping it is much better this time. I can't believe she is already 2 and DD2 is due in 7 weeks 2 days.  My family is coming to stay with us this weekend for her party so we will have 4 extra adults and 3 extra kids in our 2 bedroom apartment.

My next dr appointment is on Monday.

  • Still here! Started P17 this week and feeling good. No side effects thus far. I have however been experiencing what I think are contractions. Cervical length was 4mm at 16 wks exact, so ill just continued to be monitored everyother week.

  •  My prenatal appointment I had Tuesday went great. Heart tones in the 150's, haven't gain much weight though. I have been getting chronic hip & back pains to the point I can't walk without assistance. I was offered bed rest but it's not an everyday type of pain. I did promise my OBGYN if it got worst I will call. I have my last ultrasound 7/24 to make sure baby Ellie is developing OK. As for the VBAC, my OBGYN would do it if she's on call when I go into labor. But if she isn't no doctor will approve for a VBAC, already scheduled my c-section for 9/23 just in case LO decides to stay longer than expected.

I'll actually be over 35 when I deliver again so that is another consideration... I'm sure I'll have plenty of visits ahead of me when we do conceive. I'm glad we aren't going to be team green this time, that might be too stressful to try to hide that often!! we were team green the first time and DH said he wants to know next time so I am sure we will.

There is this huge part of me that is really excited to start trying again and feel the baby kick (hopefully I won't have an anterior placenta and can actually feel it this time) but I'm going to be a mess the whole time with worry too.  Hopefully now that we know what I might face we can figure out a way to control everything but only time will tell.

I will definitely keep you all updated on my appt.  I can't tell anyone else anyway haha we aren't going to tell anyone when we start trying again just in case we have trouble or there are issues.

  • My partial previa resolved and I'm allowed to go back to normal activities so long as I ease into things slowly.

My anatomy scan was Monday and baby looks healthy.  We also found out we're having another little girl.  I discussed VBAC/RCS with the OB.

I also toured the new hospital where I'll be delivering.  It looks fantastic (though I did burst into tears in the middle of the delivery room we were looking at which was awkward).
