RNP to Crib failure

Hi Ladies,

We have been transitioning the LO to the crib from the RNP for 2 weeks now. We swaddle and have white noise on. We have to put him in the crib when he is dead asleep.  He only lasts for 3 hours then screams. We pick him up to calm him he instantly falls back asleep so we put him in the RNP as he will continue to wake up in the crib and not fall back asleep. We also need sleep too! If we were to put him in the RNP initially he will STTN and wake up at 6 ish to eat. Anyone else experience this? Am I doing something wrong? He is quickly outgrowing the RNP and now mushing his face on the side so I know its time for the transition. For naps this past week and a half he takes them in the crib which can vary from 30 to 2 hours so that's not an issue. Thank you ladies.

Re: RNP to Crib failure

  • We had the same issue...and you may not wanna hear it but sleep training was really the only thing that worked.  We tried various times putting our LO in the RnP and with numerous failed attempts we decided to keep her in it and wait until she was 4 and a half months then we did Ferber.  She's always been a great sleeper, it was more just getting her in the crib and allowing her to fall asleep on her own bc like you we put her to sleep and tried putting her in the crib.  I have to say, it was hands down the best decision we've ever done.  We deswaddled and put her in the crib all in one go.  The first she was asleep in 36 mins and only cried for 20.  Even then I thought she'd be up numerous times once she realized she was in her crib...nope..slept all night.  This was almost a month ago and since then she has never cried at night again and sleeps all night in her crib and also done amazingly with naps.  We did it all together, started with naps the next day, she fussed for naps for probably 3 weeks but fell asleep and slept great, previously she was a 30 minute catnapper.  I have to say, if its something you'd consider, I'd highly recommend it.

  • We are going through this as well. We are in the moving process and didnt want to put M in her crib until we moved. I didnt want her to get used to her old room and then switch it up on her again for her new room. I do have to get her out of the RnP, she is out growing it and tries to sit up in it when we put her down. PP was great advice. We are going to try this tonight and see how things go.

This. Except DD still gets up to eat once during the night, and I'm fine with that. And she still naps badly, but we didn't try sleep training for naps since she's in daycare.

  • hi ladies, I feel your pain. My son slept in a nap nanny combined with Cosleeping until he was about 9 months old. I had been trying to gradually trying to transition him to his crib for about 6 weeks, with the result being that he slept for about 45 m2 hr max at a time in his crib, when i could get him to sleep it at all. One day i glanced at the monitor and i saw him sitting up in the nap nanny. Ok, i guess we have to do it the hard way... Cold turkey. I researched sleep training like crazy and ended up doing a combination of the sleep lady and the baby whisperer. It's nor cry it out, but, Warning there is some crying involved, but at his age, it is more object permanence/separation anxiety. He is teething now, so we have some regression, but he doesn't hate the crib, and doesn't immediately start screaming bloody murder. My biggest suggestion is don't put the baby in the crib fast asleep. Let them get used to the new surroundings and fall asleep on their own. Otherwise, they will wake up at some point at night, see that they're not in their normal place, and freak out, so, rather than falling back asleep, will walker up all the way. Definitely swaddle, or use sleep sacks if your baby kicks out of the swaddle. I also put a lovey right on his head because he was used to fabric around his head. Oh, and i got some soft crib sheets that feel more like the fabric in the nap nanny.
  • We did it a couple weeks ago and it went pretty well.

First, we rolled up a receiving blanket and taped it to the mattress in U shape under the sheet (putting baby's butt at the bottom of the U) to help create the cozy feeling.

Then we propped the crib up to create an angle, though not as severe as the RNP.

The first night she woke up 2 times more than usual, but a week later she's back to normal and the blanket under the sheet is gone. She's still elevated due to reflux, though.

I think part of the trick is to never use the RNP again, or you'll just prolong the process.

This. We have been using the sleep sense program since he was 11 weeks old. It is awesome.

  • We waited until DD could roll on her belly to sleep. We just transitioned this past month and she sleeps great on her belly, but hates sleeping on her back. Maybe Give it another month and try again? How close are you to the weight limit?
