High-Risk Pregnancy

new with GD

I just had my doctors appt. yesterday where he went over the results from my test. When I got the phone call I was really emotional about it all. Not so much for the diet part - luckily I got all my unhealthy eating with over with in the past week (vacation and at a wedding) IT's my second pregnancy and I'm kind of glad I'll be more accountable for my weight gain/health. But I was kind of upset with how much extra doctor stuff it means (ultrasounds -which i'm kind of excited to see the babe again so that's okay, NST, testing bloodsugar) And I was concerned with how it would affect my chances to try for a VBAC.

But he said I barely have it. I took the 2 hour test and the cut off number was 180 and my number was 183. He kind of acted like it wasn't the hugest deal but it was kind of precautionary because my daughter was kind of big (8lbs 13oz) and I'm trying for a VBAC this time.

Anyways, I have an ultrasound, meet with the dietitian and learn how to test my blood sugars tomorrow so today is kind of my limbo day.  And I'm just kind of winging what I think is a no-no. And I'm already upset that I'm sure my routine of a glass of OJ in the morning to take my prenatal vitamin is a no no, correct? What kind of things can you drink? I already drink a lot of water/LaCroix waters. But would treat myself to a glass of OJ in teh morning and Lemonade  occasionally. I think that's going to be the hardest thing for me.

Juice in the morning is a definite no, but otherwise you are just eating whole grains and limited carbs. In reality it is just a healthy diet. There are a lot of online resources, but a lot of the meal plan examples with vary based on your needs. The dietician will give you guidelines that are specific to you. For may people they find that they are eating more carbs than they would typically.

  • Welcome. Drinks are a part of this routine I miss the most. Your dietician will know what the hard parameters are. Typically the general rule is no fruit in the morning but if you have a morning glass of OJ and you test low afterwards congrats!

Sugar free lemonade, try it and if you test well then you can have it.

I drink 98 percent water throughout the day. I spice things up with a soda water with sugar free crystal light. A sip or two of soda... drinks are the pits...

  • I drink water, sparkling water, one diet soda a day (splenda) and one iced coffee a day with sugar free creamer.

    No OJ, no smoothies.

If you *really* wanted OJ, you could probably have some, but you would likely have to have it with a meal or snack (probably lunch or dinner). It would count as one of your carbs.

  • Pretty much what the PPs have said, though I would add that it will also depend in what you have in the morning with your OJ and how much juice you're talking about. A few sips to make the vitamin go down easier is one thing vs a 6 or 12oz glass. I'd really steer clear of the lemonade unless its one with a sugar substitute though. Lemonade has more sugar than some sodas. It's sad because its one of my favorites and especially hard to avoid at this time of year. Water is the absolute best thing to drink. If you need variety, add in some Crystal Light or flavored sparkling water. You can also infuse water with fresh fruit and herbs if that's of interest to you...check Pinterest for howtos. Your dietician will give you specifics but till then, get balanced protein/healthy fat/carb meals and snacks in and spread them out to keep your sugar stable. Good luck!

  • I would check your OJ and see how many carbs are in it.  if it fits into the guidelines they gave you I would try it once and see what numbers you get.  if it works then great! if not then I would have it with a different meal.  I was told milk in the morning wasn't a good idea either but I've been fine with a cup of chocolate milk with my breakfast sandwich

  • This is my first week finding out I am borderline GD and it has been hard for me as well. OJ is a BIG no no for me. Shoots my numbers way up! I have stuck with strictly water.
  • OJ doesn't work for most people, and especially not in the morning when you tend to be more insulin resistant.

I stick to water, 1 coffee a day and a glass of milk at night with my snack.

All sodas, juices and pretty much any other flavoured drinks are out for me for now.
