Finding a Grief Counselor?

I've seen some of your mention that you (and/or DH) see a grief counselor.  DH and I have decided we want to start seeing one, but don't know how to start the process of finding one.  I looked on our insurance website, but it's so overwhelming! 

Do you have any tips you'd be wiling to share on how you found your counselor/therapist?  TIA

My therapist was listed on a sheet of recommended therapists that was given to me by the hospital where I delivered.  If you ask your OB they may have some suggestions.  Good luck and I hope you find a therapist you like soon.

I received a list of therapists from my OBs office and picked one that dealt with grief. You can narrow your search (do you prefer male/female?) and call up a few and tell them what you are going through to see if it would be a good fit. Don't be afraid to try a few out. I'm a therapist and am picky because I didn't want anyone who knew me through work, and someone who was experienced with grief and loss. Good luck!

I ended up calling the Behavioral Health department at the clinic that I am able to use through my insurance. I let them know I was wanting to come in as a new patient and needed to see someone that specializes not only in grief, but more specifically tailored to the type of grief I was experiencing. They got me scheduled with someone that is absolutely amazing for me.

The funeral home we used or our daughters cremation told us about a Hospice group in our area and they had a perinatal loss counselor.

I found one through a resource that the military offers. But the hospital I delivered at had a list, as did my OB. It took awhile for me to find one that specifically deals with grief; I hope you can find one soon.

My company offers and Employee Assistance Program where they find the type of counselor you need for you.  I called and they were very nice and gave me a few names of therapists who specialize in grief and are nearby.  My therapist has helped me so much, I really hope you find someone soon.  ((hugs))

I go to a Christian Grief Counselor at a church. Had a hard time finding one too. It is very overwhelming. One of my fiends told me about her.

I never wanted to just pick one of a phone book so to speak. I asked around for refers and I love her.

Try asking your friends or family if they know of anyone that is good. If you live in Texas, I can give my counselor's info.

We found a great support group through our hospital.  It is called Love Lives On and it meets once a month.  It is super helpful.  It is comforting somehow knowing we're not alone.  I hope you are able to find the support you're looking for!!
