Accomodations for busing

My son (5 yo ASD) is starting kindy next month! We waived transportation services because I assumed we would be utilizing the onsight after-school daycare. I assumed wrong- they are full. So I find out in June that we have to find new after-school care, and set up busing. What is typical in your district for busing- an aide in a regular bus, or a "short bus"? DS has ridden a short bus since he was 2 to EI. He'll definitely need hand-to-hand assistance as a kindy, but as he gets older I foresee him perhaps not needing an accomodation, especially once he becomes familier with the routine (i.e. knowing what stop to get off at). What has your child had relative to busing services? And PS- can I vent how stressful it is to set this up in the summer when NO ONE is around- social worker is gone and not answering phone or email, even busing services isn't around until Aug. 1. So I can't figure this out until the MSW comes back Aug 15 and school starts Aug 28.. ugh. A hard lesson to learn- sign up early for after-school care!!!
