Mock embryo transfer/saline sonohysterogram?

I'm pretty sure I spelled sonohysterogram wrong.

I have our first face to face appointment with new RE at Shady Grove on Wednesday. We've already had all of our labs done and reviewed, records sent, lap report sent, and phone consultation. The doctor who I spoke to was great and we talked for well over an hour. We are scheduled for the mock embryo transfer and this saline ultrasound of my uterus. He told me that he wanted to prepare for transferring embryos, and that they do this test to assure that there were not problems with the uterus that may need surgical correction prior to attempting a transfer.

Anyone have this? Is it painful? I should have asked him before but my head was spinning from all of the information. Also, we will be going on CD5. When do most people start medications? I am presuming that we will have to wait out this cycle and start with my next cycle.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Mock embryo transfer/saline sonohysterogram?

  • Yep this is a normal procedure to have done prior. I dont find it painful at all...just light cramps and its so fast. And I usually start stims in cd3 so Im assuming youll probably start stims in your next cycle. GL! Glad your RE was able to give you lots of info!

  • Hey Toriables! Honestly, I did find the SIS procedure a bit crampy and uncomfortable. I had to take a few deep breaths, but it was not so bad as to call it painful...they told me to take 3 Advil an hour beforehand to help relieve crampiness. It helped! Many people say it's not painful at all, so I hope that ends up being your experience. One thing, though, I do recall that they wanted the SIS done on CD7 to CD9...just wondering if you want to double check that timing...anyone else want to chime in on SIS timing?

I never had a mock transfer ... My RE doesn't do them.

You sound super organized and ready! Sounds like next cycle you might do IVF unless you are starting with BCP. Then you would probably be two cycles out. GL!

  • Hi there welcome to shady grove! Just wanted to say hi as I'm a shady grove patient also.

As for the procedure I remember being nervous but it was a piece of cake. I honestly don't remember the mock transfer and a day or so before my egg retrieval I called my nurse to tell her I was concerned we hadn't done it. She said yes you did it in January!

  • My first one was pretty rough because they had to use extra saline to check my septum that was a huge surprise when they got in there. My second one before ivf, I was fine! No big deal at all. I was also instructed to take 800 mg ibuprofen before hand. Good luck!! I'm sure you'll be fine!

  • I'm a Shady Grove patient as well.  For my first (and only) IVF my nurse had me call on CD1 to schedule CD3 bw/us.  Everything looked fine to start and on CD3 I started BCPs.  At that time, she also had me schedule my MET/SHG.  She said it didn't matter which day, just as long as it was while I was still on BCPs.  After that, I was on BCPs for 3 weeks and then started stims.

The SHG for me was awful, but I think I had the opposite experience of most women here.  The original HSG was slightly uncomfortable but otherwise no discomfort.  The SHG however was incredibly painful for me.  I had tears in my eyes the whole time and couldn't wait for it to be over.  I also wasn't told to take anything before, so I don't know if that had an effect or not.

    GL!

  • Thank you all! I called my nurse and she said it's fine to take motrin before coming in. It sounds like I will need it; I am a big baby when it comes to pain!

We are going through the Chesterbrook office! We were at the Geisinger clinic first, but I ended up being very disappointed with them. My original RE was very nice and concerned; The problem was, she had surgery and then I didn't see her again at all. Her partner insisted on doing IUI#2 and #3 several days too early in my opinion. Then my OB mentioned Shady Grove, and we found out about shared risk, my parents offered us the money....and here we are! I am excited to be joining all of you fellow Shady Grove ladies! Thanks for the support!
