do i have any options in terms of needing multiple convertible car seats (me, DH, MIL)? do i need one for each of us, or is there something with a base out there? seems like a big expense to need 3 of these.
the only convertible car seat I know of with bases is the graco all in one smart seat. It $300 and then additional bases are another $90 a piece. Its a really nice seat however you can buy another car seat for $90 and not have to switch out the very heavy car seat. I'm in the same situation I have to buy 5 car seats because they all keep her a lot and it would just be too much moving changing car seats back and forth leaving a seat at the sitters and so on. We've just slowly being buying seats when they're on sale, you can find some really nice car seats for reasonable prices.
no bases, you have to uninstall/reinstall every time it's used or just buy 1 for each car your LO will be riding in. It's your call. You can get cheaper ones though.
For an inexpensive and perfectly safe second or third seat, look at the cosco scenera or the evenflo tribute. I purchased the tribute to travel with and paid about 50 dollars for it.
ok thanks for the info. i guess i can look for deals and space out the buying. i didn't realize the graco one was so expensive and then adding in the cost for the bases, its just not worth it!
This may not be helpful but for me my DH and I only purchased one for his truck and our DD goes into the infant carrier that she still fits in fine in my car. We aren't getting one for my MIL or my mother either. I feel if they want one or will keep her more than they usually do which isn't very often then we can either let them use ours or they can buy one themselves that they want. Too much of a hassle to buy one for everyone when the parents mainly need them. It may be different for you and your family but that's how I see it. They can get really expensive though!
Re: convertible car seats
You can get a cheaper seat for grandparents. They are all safe. The Cosco Scenera is a good cheaper option.
The Graco convertible seat mentioned is not a good idea. It has a short shell and will be outgrown quickly, and then you will need to buy more seats.
