A sunblock that actually works?? Any recs?

My LOs keep getting sun even when they have sunblock on and we reapply. Plus we are never out longer than an hour in the sun. We have tried target brand, banana boat, neutrogena and aveeno all with SPFs of 50 or higher. DH's family has a history of moles and skin cancer so I'm super paranoid. What sunblock are you using and does it work well.

  • My kids have sensitive skin and are very fair. Neutrogena pure and free baby sunblock stick works well and we haven't had problems. On the body, I use my Oil of Olay- it is only SPF 15 but my teenage pasty white goth self never got so much as a shade using it, so it is what I use on myself daily, the kids' arms and legs and face sometimes, if I forget the stick.

  • We use the target spray-on sunscreen and have never had a problem. I think the key is putting it on 15-30 mins before you're going to be out in the sun. We put it on at home before driving to the pool and have never had a problem with it rubbing off in their carseats, etc.

  • When you say get some sun do you mean burned or some color? I don't think there is any way except full clothing cover to prevent any color at all...and frankly if you are using sunscreen, a little vitamin d from the sun in one hour is not a bad thing.

we use the neutrogena pure and free baby stick for face and the coppertone kids pure and simple for body. It has a pretty low score for the chemicals etc on the ewg website, check it out at https://www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/. There are other things w lower scores that are harder to find and more expensive but these two are not bad .

my kids are fair and outside quite a bit and have or gotten burned w hese products even at beach and pool.

  • We've had good luck with the Neutrogena wet skin kids SPF 70 and also Coppertone kids continuous spray SPF 50.

  • I wouldn't stress on the SPF - really those high SPFs are marketing gimmicks and don't provide extra protection.  Use a sunblock (with something like zinc oxide) vs. a sunscreen.  We use primarily California Baby but also have used badger.  And a little tan is ok and unavoidable unless you never go in the sun.  The EWG sunscreen guide is a good read about what to look for in a sunblock.
  • We had used baby ganics but had a bad experience with it. So I went back to our trusted coppertone kids (tear free lotion spf 50) works great and no issues!

  • I've been obsessed with finding the perfect sunscreen. My ideal one would be 1) physical/mineral blocker - preferrable non-nano Zinc based. 2) effective. 3) easily spreadable. 4) non-greasy. 5) does not turn my kid totally white.

So my favorite are  Babo Botanicals, KidSport spray.

  • We just spent a week in FL, outside most of the day (Disney, beach, etc.), and used Neutrogena's pure & free baby, I think the SPF is 60.

They got a bit of pink under their eyes (in spite of hats), and otherwise nothing. I was very happy with the level of protection.
