Developmental delays

I'm feeling discouraged. My 26 weeker is now almost 10 1/2 mo., 7 1/2 adj., and he is still not rolling from back to front or sitting up. He was diagnosed with a bilateral PVL at 2 mo. Social/emotional skills are off the charts but development is behind. We see PT at home every other week and have an evaluation for private PT next week. Our last NICU follow up we were referred to the center for children with disabilities. We can't see them until The middle of Aug. and we have an MRI in Sept. I'm just anxious and nervous. Also frustrated and feel like I've done something wrong. I have tons of friends with term babies that were born when I was due and they are crawling and doing all these great things. It's hard. Advice please.

Re: Developmental delays

  • My LO is in PT as well- 1 hr per week through early intervention. We're on the wait list for speech which around here i've heard takes a while. I get frustrated as well but DH reminds me that our main job right now is to advocate for LO and to make sure that we organize the services that she needs.  So I guess part of my coping strategy is  making calls and following up with people and taking notes of my converstations to make sure that we don't slip through the cracks and that people are staying on top of things.

  • My 25 weeker did not have IVH or PVL (that we know of...PVL was suspected at one point but her last MRI was clear)  but has been slow to catch up.  She didnt start rolling from back to belly until 6 months adjusted and wasn't really comfortably sitting up until 7.5 months adjusted.  If you can I would up your PT to at least once a week and give him lots and lots of tummy time to strengthen the core.  We also used a prone swing called a wingbo for core development.
