Trouble TTC

O before trigger shot? Help!

So I went to my RE today Mondayto check my follies. He said I had 3 good ones but they weren't large enough yet so for me to come back on Thursday for my trigger shot and friday for IUI. When I got home I took an ovulation test its the one that gives you your 4 most fertile days the first two days show you your estrogen elevation that happens about 48 hours prior to your LH surge. I will probably get my LH surge on Wednesday and ovulate 24 to 36 hours after that. If I do ovulate on Thursday same day as trigger shot, is an IUI on friday too late? If I ovulate sooner than thursday, say on tuesday or wednesday, is the trigger on thursday and iui on friday too late?

Re: O before trigger shot? Help!

  • If you ovulate before you are supposed to trigger, there is no point in triggering. My RE had me use OPK's so that if I got a surge before I was supposed to trigger, I could come in for the IUI. That said, if you are ovulating on your own before your follicles are mature, that's no good, and could be part of the reason you are having trouble. What size were your follies at your appointment? They may be fine, depending on what they were today when you went in.

If you surge on Wednesday, it would go in for your IUI on Thursday and not trigger at all. I would call your RE to double check, but that was what my protocol was. GL to you!

  • Did they tell you how large your follies were today? My RE always double checked growth with an ultrasound before instructing me to take a trigger shot. If you think you will surge before Thursday, I'd call them and let them know. It's pointless to use a trigger shot after O.

  • My follies were 13, 12, and 12. The doc scheduled me to come back and check their size again on Thursday before the trigger shot, and as long as they're good and I can do the trigger shot, he would do the IUI on Friday. I just called my docs office and left a message with his nurse. Just waiting to hear back from him.

UPDATE: RE say to do the trigger even if you ovulate on your own because normally you only release one egg per ovulation cycle, and the trigger will cause more follies to erupt, giving you more eggs for potential fertilization. And you're right, my infertility problem has been because my follies are erupting before they are mature. RE just moved my appointment and trigger shot to Wednesday and IUI on Thursday. Im super excited and DH and I are hoping and praying for a little one!
  • On one of my cycles I had my appt set for a Saturday and the ovulation test was positive on Thursday.  I called the RE on Thursday and he told me to come in Friday for the u/s. The u/s confirmed that I had already ovulated on one side, but I still had another follicle on the other side that had not ovulated yet.  So I took my trigger shot and had the IUI the next morning.

After that my RE schedules all of my u/s 2 days earlier than normal so that we don't miss it.  Now my OPK are positive on the day of my u/s every time.  I do the trigger and I ovulate the 24ish hours later.

I would just ask if you can come in for your u/s on Wednesday.  I am pretty sure follicles grow about 1mm a day, so yours might not quite be ready (my RE wants them between 16mm & 24mm), but at least the RE can tell you where you stand.

Aha, that makes sense! Well I am glad that he was able to move your appointment up and FX for some good sized follies when you go in. GL to you!
