Attention Nurses!! I have questions!

I'm a nurse in the OR and I'm frequently around Xray ,fluoro, and sevo! I'm super paranoid about it and need to tell my supervisor, but I haven't told my mom yet. I wanted her to be the first, but hubby wants it to be a surprise for her and wants to wait until after the first ultrasound. What to do?! And any tricks from other nurses for baby safety?

  • I'm not a nurse, but as far as being worried about telling your Mom first- I would go ahead and tell your supervisor and not stress.  Your Mom will still be the first family or friends you tell apart from your DH, right?  It's not like you're telling your supervisor because the two of you are friends and you just felt like telling them.

  • I'm a veterinarian and was worried about all of that with my first - i would go ahead and tell your supervisor because it's really important that they be able to help you take proper precautions. I wouldn't worry so much about your mom...family and work are two different things, IMO.

  • Im an OR nurse too!! With fluro I wear two leads, one front an back and try to stay back as much as possible. They say 6 feet is good. The xray techs know I am so they are good about letting me know when they are going to shoot. With the gases I havent had a problem unless we do a mask induction on a rowdy kid. The gas isn't turned on till the tube is secured so no gas is escaping. My biggest issue is the bone cement. I stopped scrubbing total joints to avoid it, if im circulating I just step out while they cement. Sadly some of my coworkers know and none of my family knows.

  • Im in a room today with kids and have been using sevo the entire case! Nobody knows yet because I just found out on friday myself! I'm going to go talk to my supervisor today but I don't want it to spread like wildfire with being so early. I hope I didn't do anything bad by being in a sevo room all morning!

This!  You'd be telling your boss out of safety for you and your baby, not because he/she is more important than your mom.  This is my third pregnancy, if it makes you feel any better, several people knew before MH did...ssssh, don't tell him though.

Agreed. I was working in a lab with a lot of repro hazards my first pregnancy and I had to tell my boss and schedulers right away at 5 weeks so I could avoid them. We didn't tell anyone else until around 11 weeks.

  • I work in sicu and was worried about that too. I told my family and then went and had the charge rn put my name on the board with the other pregnant nurses. It's a just for making assignments bc of the VRE and CMV pts. I hate that my whole unit had to know at 6 weeks but if its the safest thing then that's all that matters.
