Baby Names

4 syllable first name

I really like the name Evangeline for my baby girl (pronounced Evangeleen, like the actress Evangeline Lily). We would use the nick name Evie. But I'm hesitant because Evangeline is a bit of a mouthful. Our last name is only four letters long and two syllables.

What do you think -- too long or ok?

  • I don't mind - a lot a lot of - four-syllable names. DD3 has a 4-syllable name and it is fine. DD2 would have had a 4-syllable name, as well if it had been solely up to me.

Gorgeous name, and Evie is darling!

People frequently get all worried that my child has a 3 syllable name: but what do you CALL him?? Um, by his name. It's NBD.

  • DD's name is Anastasia.  We call her it about 25% of the time, increasing a bit because DS is feeling comfortable with the name now.  We mostly call her Annie.  It hasn't been a problem, especially since we use a nickname.  And her mn is 3 syllables and our last name is two.  I think it's fine.

  • My daughter is Evangeline Kate, nickname Evie. Last name is also two syllables!

We rarely call her by her full name, but I've never found it to be too much. People usually gush that it's so pretty when I say her full name Big Smile

The only tricky thing has actually been her nickname. We pronounce it with a short E (rhymes with levy) and the spelling of Evie makes it very ambiguous. She gets called "Eve-y" a lot.

If you're planning to go with the long E pronunciation then I can guarantee no problem! If you're thinking about the short E, I recently met someone who uses the same pronunciation and spells it Evi. For some reason that does make more sense, and I'm wondering if it's too late to drop the extra E from my DD's nickname!
