School-Aged Children

Please help

My dtr will be 6 in Oct. and I had her completely potty trained by her 3rd birthday. Well for the last year she has had 5UTIs and is having accidents all the time. She used to wake up to go potty when she was sleeping, never had accidents during the day, nothing. They did an U/S on her and also did a cath w/ the dye to check her kidneys and found nothing. She has go so bad to now it looks like she has small blisters around that area along with a rash. Has anyone had this problem? What can I do for her? I'm at a loss and don't know what else to do..

Is she wiping herself properly and washing her hands? DD still needs reminding sometimes.

Could she have a sensitivity to the dyes in her underwear? I have a friend who needs to wear only white cotton underwear because anything else could give her a UTI.

  • Is she having regular soft bowel movements? There is actually a great book called "Its No Accident." The Dr. who wrote it explains how untreated constipation can cause wetting problems in previously potty trained kids which sounds a lot like you daughter. I think the problem is that the stool in the rectum becomes impacted and puts pressure constantly on the bladder which causes spasms and accidents, especially at night. You might want to check out that possibility. Good Luck! I hope you find some answers.

  • I would not take a little one to a chiropractor.  Maybe a pedi, a urologist, etc

A chiro, along with other specialists, are actually very good for kids and can help with a whole list of issues.  You just need to make sure you go to a chiro that is trained to work with kids.  I have seen one for years and while he does not work with kids, his partner does and he is excellent.  I used to take my younger DD when she was an infant to help with her horrible reflux and it did wonders.

  • If she is not wiping properly this can be the cause every time.  If she has a bowel movement and wipes incorrectly just once, it can cause bacteria to find a way and cause the UTI.

My daughter has kidney reflux grade 2.  She is now 8 years old and we are on the watch for UTI's all the time.  If she so much as runs a fever, we have a urinalysis done at the pediatrician.  She has had a total of 6 UTI's in her lifetime and I know at least one was caused from a bowel movement.
