Urine sample shows possible infection

I was at the dr last Wednesday and gave the usual urine sample. The dr called me tonight yes on Sunday to tell me there was a small amount of bacteria in my urine. She said it could be nothing and the fact that I have a cerclage might have something to do with it. She wants me back tomorrow for a specimen thru a catheter. She said that if its an infection they can treat with antibiotics but it may mean given thru IV at the hospital too.

Should I worry? I'm a worry wart. Has anyone experienced this? Are the babies going to be harmed?

And...does the catheter being put in hurt?

  • So sorry you're going through this. I can't weigh in on the bacterial infection, but I'm sure they will take good care of you. As far as the catheter, yes, it does hurt but only for a few seconds while they insert it. The more you can relax, the better. Gl! Keep us updated!

Might just be a UTI, not a big deal at all, I've had 2 this pregnancy. Catheter just pinches for a second.

  • I dealt with UTIs my entire pregnancy with my twins.  Had antibiotics several times, but otherwise had no issues with the infections - the meds cleared them right up.  I didn't have a cerclage or anything along those lines...so I don't know how that factors in.  Every time I had a UTI, I was diagnosed through urine samples (didn't have symptoms).

I had gestational diabetes during my twin pregnancy, and I think that probably explains my UTIs.

    Good luck!

  • As hard as it is, like PP said, the more you relax, the less the catheter will bother you. I had one inserted shortly after my epi was placed in the hospital -- that epi turned out to be a dud (I was in significant pain the entire time I dilated, and they had to put me under for my emergency c/s, since I wasn't numbed out). Suffice it to say, I could feel most of the placement of the catheter (and it wasn't a big deal).
