Poll: Maple Syrup or Pancake Syrup

The poll function won't work. Gotta do this the manual way.

I made French toast for breakfast and we only use maple syrup, the real stuff from Vermont or Canada. When I bought more yesterday I noticed I could get Aunt Jemima/Mrs Butterworth for $4 vs $8 for maple. I looked at ingredient list and saw that the $4 stuff is pure corn syrup. I just feel like maple syrup is more real and has a richer flavor.  Who is with me??

Re: Poll: Maple Syrup or Pancake Syrup

  • It took me a little while to get used to maple, but now I cringe when the other stuff is the only option.  Costco has big ol things of maple syrup for a great price

  • No fake stuff! Yuck! Here we can get the maple syrup at farmer's markets. It's not cheaper, but it's nice to promote small businesses.

  • maple syrup all the way
  • Maple is the obvious answer here.

But to be honest, usually neither. I generally eat my pancakes dry, my waffles with butter or berries with powdered sugar, and French toast with cinnamon.

  • Not a fan of maple syrup, but I love the inexpensive sugary stuff. Aunt Jemima? Mrs. Butterworth's? Yes please.
  • Maple...or peanut butter....mmmmm

  • I love maple syrup, but we usually do the butter flavor lite pancake syrup because that is what H likes and he will eat it more than I will the maple. Every now and then I get it to make man pleasing chicken though, and that way I get waffles the way I like for a few days after.

Not always, but most of the time.

I eat cereal dry too. I'm not saying it's normal, but it's how I roll.

  • Real maple, or just a bunch of cut up fruit. We went off all corn syrup products a few years ago. It was hard for my H, who lurves Mrs. Butterworth.

You can usually get a great price on maple syrup at Trader Joes, if you have one. I also highly recommend B grade, as it has a richer flavor.

Pure maple syrup all the way I don't know why anyone would pour high fructose corn syrup over anything they wanted to eat this goes for ketchups, salad dressings and other condiments, too. Imitation vanilla bugs me to no end, too gross. :ETA: DH eats his pancakes and waffles "dry", too it's silly. I make all our pancake and waffle batter, he cooks it up but, we don't do plain old pancakes much. It's just so easy to throw in some fruit and cinnamon, or cocoa powder and nuts, or whatever we want that day. DS's favorite is pumpkin he'd eat pumpkin waffles every day for the rest of his life if we let him.

  • Real, no options.  If I can't afford it, I don't eat pancakes.  I'm not buying a bottle of caramel-colored corn syrup for $4.

ETA: Also, it's amazing on vanilla ice cream.  YWIA.

  • I married a Canadian so the fake stuff is outlawed in this house.

I had never had real maple syrup until I met him. I don't think I could back.

  • Maple.
We usually have some face stuff too for DH he grew up on that stuff and wants it every now and then.

Whenever the topic of sugar or processed food comes up, there's at least one in every bunch.

Of course, someone who prefers to skip drizzling additional sugar on his food altogether is "silly."

DH  likes the great value brand from Walmart , butter flavored.  I eat my pancakes with butter or chocolate chips,or not at all.
  • Maple Syrup. I live in Michigan and I buy it from locals. I have been moving our family to less precessed stuffs. I did grow up on it. I prefer it's taste and learned that you really do not need a lot of it. So I pour all the syrup for the kids.

DH prefers butter flavored store stuff. That is his choice. I don't buy it though. He rarely ever eats waffles/pancakes/french toast.

Although, DH does LOVE it when I make yogurt (homemade) and add real Maple Syrup for the sweetener. He can never get enough of it.

  • I use the real stuff in recipes but aunt jemima's style for pancakes and waffles. I realize this is sacrilege, since I am Canadian and all. I find the real stuff too sweet for breakfast foods. I mean, if it's all I had I wouldn't say no, but given the choice, I like the fake stuff on pancakes. We usually have both on hand.

    Sorry.

Eh, if you're eating enough of either one for it to make a difference, you're eating too many pancakes.

  • Real maple or agave
  • Sacrilege says the Vermonter! real, Grade B Vermont Maple Syrup is the only way to go. Put it on pancakes, waffles, ice cream or for a super awesome treat....fresh snow!,

Maple syrup, being natural, has antioxidants in it, including vitamins and minerals like zinc. Theoretically, it's healthier.

It's still mostly sucrose though and metabolized similarly to white sugar.

This! I love cracker barrel maple syrup, but it's a rare treat for me at $8 a bottle and my dh won't use it.
