Pumping at work

So I go back to work in 6 more weeks. I am really bummed about it, because I have been successfully breastfeeding, when I wasn't able to with my first, and I'm afraid going back to work is going to completely mess that up. I share an office with 2 other women, so I don't think I'll be able to pump in there and I'm not even sure it's appropriate for me to ask them if that's ok. We have a conference room, but I'll only be able to use that when it's not otherwise in use. So what are my options? There is no way I'm going to pump in the bathroom, I think that's so gross. Does anyone pump in their car? I park in a structure, so it's a 5 minute walk there and back, but I honestly can't think of another option if I can't get into the conference room. There are also no empty offices, in case anyone was going to offer that as an option.

Re: Pumping at work

  • Talk to your boss or manager. Your company is legally required to provide you a NONbathroom space to pump when necessary. That means not the conference room either because it could be booked when you need it. The law is on your side here, you just need to ask...and possibly make them aware of the requirement.

  • You need to talk to your manager; like pp said they are legally required to provide a non-bathroom space for you.  I had to pump in a storage closet; it wasn't ideal but it worked and I did it successfully for 9 months.  Your car is an option, but if it were me I'd ask my manager for a space first.

  • I was offered the conference room or my manager's office.  The conference room door doesn't latch closed, so I had to wedge a chair behind it and hope it didn't slip open and I felt bad kicking my manager out of her office, so I usually used my car. My back windows are tinted, so I just parked in a corner spot everyday and sat in the back seat.  I was actually more comfortable out there. I'd definitely ask management (I ended up having to ask HR) first, but know that your own car may be the most comfortable spot for you.

  • I think you definitely need to talk to your boss.  They can help you schedule booking the conference room, and if that's not available your boss may need to give you his own office.  It is your legal right, so don't back down!

  • As pp's have mentioned, I'd definitely talk to your supervisor about possible space options. Legally, they have to provide you with a space. Your car, of course, could be an option, if you're more comfortable with the option(s) they offer. I think I contacted my sup about a month before returning to iron out details about my scheduled and I mentioned pumping then, just to plant a seed. Good luck with the transition.

Well, the first time, I did use the disabled stall in the restroom, in a chair pulled in the corner away from the toilet.

But if that is not an option for you, I would use your car.  No big deal.  I know it will be hard, but try not to stress out over it, that in itself could affect your supply.

I honestly would be more comfortable in my car than a conference room but find what feels best for you, that is the most important.

  • I agree, talk to your boss. Though honestly I have pumped in my car and it isn't that bad.

  • I used my car for 5 months.  NBD. I preferred it over my cubical office. It had a door, but it didn't lock. Just a "do not disturb" sign.
