Preemies

Peg/gtube

Anyone familiar with peg or gtube for their baby? I'm looking to see a gi specialist for my preemie and looking for stories of those parents who have had their babies get one and if they had to be put under in the vent for it? And if there were those who didn't. And how the procedure went and the recovery time and hospital stay

Re: Peg/gtube

  • Our little boy has a gtube. He had it done while he was in the NICU and came home about a week later. He recovered pretty quickly. I'm sure some kids go home sooner but we had to do our countdown. The first few days seemed very uncomfortable but he got used to it. The first few months you are going to be dealing with lots of granulation tissue.

  • My DD got a g-tube at 9 months due to failure to thrive. Recovery was pretty quick. Our GI and surgical team felt that a g-tube is better for her needs. Though some doctors do peg and then g-tube.

Here are some questions we asked prior to surgery:

    1.       Type of g-tube: PEG, Bard, Mini, AMT?

    2.       Outpatient/overnight? If overnight stay over how many nights (we were originally told one in turned out to be 3)

    3.       If PEG, when would we switch to a lower profile button?

    4.       Pain management post-surgery?

    5.       Training on g-tube for us/stoma care

    6.       Pulled out ? what is the plan? Venting? Clothing? Activities? Bathing/Swimming? Tummy Time?

    7.       How long out for daycare?

    8.   Other procedures to be done while under General Anesthesia? (we ended up having some bloodwork done for other specialists)

    9.   Nightly feedings ? Bolus or Continuous feeds?

    10. Usage vs regular oral feeds...

  • Also, if you do get a g-tube - find out if it is a mic-key or an AMT mini button.

Each brand supports different organizations that will send you for a nominal fee a stuffed animal equipped with a g-tube. While your LO may be too young for it, it is a great tool to show caregivers and yourself to practice on.
