Is it safe to have a young kitten and 6 month old baby?

Sure, if you get a kitten that has the right temperament. Look into a Persian or Himalayan kitten, they are the most laid back. I've had a few and all of them, even as kittens, were just lovey little food whores that would take anything you dished them.

Also, we got a puppy when my son was barely 4 months old.
