stomach bug?

LO started throwing up after every feeding on Monday, more than spitting up I'm talking projectile vomiting. I took him to the pedi and she said keep him hydrated until it passes. He can handle small amounts of pedialyte, but add soon as I try to mix it with formula per pedi's recommendation he throws it all up. He's getting enough to stay hydrated, he does have diarrhea and a low grade fever 99.5.
How long will this last? My pedi makes it sound like it's no big deal but I hate seeing him in pain. .. Anyone else dealing with something like this?

Re: stomach bug?

  • I haven't dealt with this thank goodness! But I think I'd give up on the pedis lyre since your LO is throwing it up. Just try to keep your LO hydrated. If it doesn't pass or the fever keeps climbing, I would call the pedi again or possible go to the hospital. Dehydration cn be very serious and it happens very easily with diarrhea. Hugs to both u and your LO! I hope it passes soon!

  • Thanks! I called my pedi back yesterday afternoon and after an hour of waiting the nurse called and said that since they were booked for the rest of the day and closed today (the 4th) I should take him to the ER. He had a slight fever, they gave him some Zofran and he was able to keep some Pedialyte down- which was a blessing because they said if he didn't keep it down they would have to give him IV hydration. The ER doctor still thinks it's some type of stomach bug but it's not passing because he can't get hydrated so he's thinking a day or so of the Zofran to help keep liquids down and he will turn things around. We've had two vomiting instances since we've been home, once because he ate too much (my bad) and the other time I don't think enough time had lapsed from when we gave the Zofran to feeding him (we waited another 15 minutes and tried again and it stayed down).

His appetite is starting to come back which is good and bad (wants to eat more than he can handle at this point). He also slept for a decent stretch so I'm hoping that with more fluids and good rest we can shake this.

  • My lo also had a stomach bug last week.  We were instructed to give him pedialyte but to not mix it with formula.  The pedi told us to give him pedialyte until I could slowly start giving him formula the next day.  It took him about a week to get over it completely.
