Cloth Diapering

CD Fail

Hi all,

Hoping I can get some ideas from you ladies. I have a nine month old DD who I had planned on CDing. It was a disaster and I really had my heart set on it. I have a large supply of various cloth diapers including bum genius and many others. No matter what I did DD leaked right through every one. She wasn't leaking out the side, instead the whole diaper was saturated very quickly. She couldn't make it through a nap or anything. I was having to wash bedding and clothes constantly. I added inserts but it barely helped and poor DD had such a big diaper that none of her clothes fit over it. Eventually I gave up as I was tired of changing her clothes and bedding constantly. Now DH and I are ttc # 2, and I'm trying to decide if I should give it another go or resale the diapers (not even sure if this is ever done?) So, does anyone have any ideas what I might have done wrong, or is this common?

Re: CD Fail

  • I just have a couple questions:

-were the diapers new or bought used?

-how often were you changing your DD? With any diaper it is recommended every 2-3 hours at the very least, some LO's need to be changed every 2 hours

    -what detergent were you using?

-were the inserts completely saturated when you changed your DD?

  • Diapers were all new

We never made it to two hours-she was saturated by 1 or 1.5

Are you just using the microfiber inserts?  You might need something more absorbent (especially at naptime).  Natural fibers are much more absorbent and usually much thinner.  For cheap, you can stuff with prefolds.  They will make for a fluffy butt but hold much more and are easy to wash.  Also, you can look at hemp, bamboo, and cotton inserts and doublers.

I don't know what kind of inserts. I have multiple different kinds and a lot of bum genius ones. Natural fibers? What brand? The detergent I'm using isn't causing it, you don't think?

  • Look for hemp inserts. They have excellent absorbency without being very bulky.

  • If they were completely saturated, I'd try a more absorbent fabric like bamboo or hemp. My 6 month old can wear MF daytime, but needs hemp underneath (MF and hemp inserts in together) for a nap, and a huge bamboo fitted for bedtime.

  • Also, for the next one, you might be fine. Some kids are heavy wetters, some aren't. I'd give it another go seeing as you have the diapers already.
