Toddlers: 24 Months+

milk from a bottle

So how long is too long to have LO on a bottle. I know the recommendation is 12 mos. to get them off of it but many parents keep them on longer. My DS goes to bed instantly after giving him a bottle. He also dosent eat a ton of food and I know he's getting nutrients/vitamins from his milk. We are trying to transition him off of them but part of me struggles with the question, "what harm is it really doing?". What's the longest you had LO on a bottle?

Re: milk from a bottle

  • Mine was off the bottle by 1 but many of my friends kids were still using them at around 18 months. DS nursed until 18 months and I would have gladly gone longer if he wanted. I have no idea what is too long for a bottle. I'd guess that depends on the child. Maybe 2? I really have no clue since mine primarily nursed and I was willing to go for up to 3 years.

  • DS was done with bottles by 13 months and DD by 12 months.

  • DD1 took a bottle and was done with it at about a year.

    DD2 nursed until 14 mo.

DD3 took a bottle of WCM until 18 mo at the urging of docs to try to get her to gain weight.  Didn't work, so I instantly switched to a sippy.  All 3 of my kids (3, 5 & 7) just had a cup of milk before bed though.  (btw, sippy only for the LO)

  • DS1 was done with bottles by 12 months, nursed till ~14 months.

I would stop the bottle before bed ASAP, not just because it's a bottle but because it sounds like LO is going to bed right after, which can cause tooth decay (at least, that's how I'm reading your OP).

  • 17 to 18 months for my oldest. I thought it was a good time. He wasn't ready at a year and I'm glad we didn't wait until he was 2.
  • DS1 was off the bottle as soon as I transitioned him to milk within a week of turning one.  What I did as far as the night time transition though was continued to give him a sippy cup of milk before bed for a while.  Same routine just with a sippy cup instead of bottle.  I don't remember how long, but it was few months.  And then I slowly started moving it earlier into the evening until he was drinking his last milk at dinner.

dd1: 18 months.  She wouldn't give it up.  We found a sippy that she liked and switched her.

DD2: cold turkey at 12 months, and never looked back.  It is what worked for her.

DD3: is ten months and 2 weeks, and gets formula via straw sippy four times a day.  She gets a bed time bottle.  I am hoping to end the bottle at 11 months.  She will continue to get formula until closer to 2 years, due to size.  So I figured I would start her transition now.

  • My LO took a nighttime bottle til about 22 months. Actually, he was off bottles entirely at 13 months, but I was still breastfeeding. When I was ready to wean at 18/19 months, he would NOT take milk of any kind from a cup. I decided it would be okay to substitute the bottle for the nighttime nursing session. We did that for a few months, but I wanted to be done with it by age 2. It was actually pretty easy to switch him at that age, I just told him he was too old for bottles and he could have a cup of milk. He still doesn't drink much from the cup of milk, but we still offer it.

I was the same as you, my son is pretty picky so I was concerned about his nutrition. He likes yogurt, though, so I let him have 2 yogurts a day. He also likes cheese. I figured by age 2 he should be able to find something to eat. He's still growing, even without the milk!
