Preemies

Sippy cups

Ds is almost 13 months old... How did that happen ??? Random fact... One year ago was our overnight stay with him. Crazy!

Anyway he still loves his bottle. He hates every sippy cup we've tried and doesn't grasp the straw concept. How do I teach him these things?? Is this a preemie thing or just my son being difficult??

Eta he still nurses as well so I don't want to do anything to hurt that either

Re: Sippy cups

  • I think it is just something that happens with some kids, preemie or not.  I have friend that pretty much went from bottle to regular cup at almost 2 years with her son because nothing worked.  She did find one type of bottle that had a sippy like spout attachment.

DS didn't get the straw sippy right away either....but we used the Tommee tippee soft straw and he was able to figure those out after a week or so.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

I wasn't able to breast feed for very long so I'm not sure I'm much help, but we let DD play with empty plastic cups for awhile when we were introducing sippy cups. She would mimic us drinking and then we would swap back and forth between a sippy with formula and the empty cup. She still uses her bottles and hasn't got the hang of straws, but getting to mimic us with a real cup seemed to peak her interest in the sippy.

  • Thanks! I hate to always wonder if its a preemie thing but since he was born before suck swallow breathe I wasn't sure if this would need to be taught.

We moved to a straw sippy, and Playtex makes one that you can squeeze the liquid up the straw, to help them learn what to do. Just keep offering, he'll get it eventually.

  • PhillyGal you must be reading my mind. My LO is younger but I have been thinking about sippy cups the last couple of days and how and when we will start to transition. Please keep us updated as to how things are going and what you find to be successful.

  • My son always hated sippy cups so much that we had to go from bottle straight to regular cups. Of course, we had to help him a lot until he was good at it but he preferred that much more. We never did figure out his hatred of sippy cups.

I think I'm giving up on sippies and going to a straw. He cries whenever I get a sippy in his mouth, he hates them!! I've tried like 10 cups.

ETA I just realized I've only tried to offer milk in them a few times... maybe water isn't interesting enough for him to want to try ... duh

We skipped sippies entirely - I didn't see much point in teaching him to drink out of a new thing that I'd just have to get him to stop using eventually.  We went straight to open cups (we used the Doidy - do they still make those??) and straws - I filled 2 straw cups with milk; one for each of us.  Then we sat on the couch together and just hung out with him watching me take drinks until he figured it out.
  • I don't think it's a preemie specific issue either. My girls have been using a sippy cup since they were 6 months old and learned to use the straw sippy a month later and actually prefer the straw one now. We just kept trying. I heard the best time to try new things is first thing in the morning when they wake up. I read it somewhere... I think it has to do with them being happiest and more willing to try something new. Good luck! LO will get it eventually.
