Weaning??

Ok, most of the time I lurk and I am generally too busy with LO to even do that (maybe a time management thing...I don't know. Or maybe it's because he doesn't nap worth a crap) Anyway, I still enjoy reading some of the advice on this board and have been thankful to have such resources. Speaking of advice, we are thinking of weaning S before one year. I don't know the first thing about how to begin or what to do in the middle of the night when he wakes up wanting boob! He has begun to self wean a bit, and is eating 3 to 4 solid meals a day with breast milk to "wash it down". Anyone out there in this situation? Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject? I don't have time for a novel, but right now I have no idea where to begin, but I sure as hell don't want my son grabbing my boob while ordering fries with his Happy Meal, just because mom didn't know how to ween (creepy!). Thank guys!

Re: Weaning??

  • The Kellymom site has a few different weaning techniques.

  • I did sleep training for night weaning both kids.

To transition DS to WCM, I started at 12 months by replacing one daytime nursing session at a time with a sippy cup of milk.

He surprisingly self weaned off of the bedtime session. The early morning session was the last to go at about 14-15 months, at which time my supply had dropped b/c I was pg again. Plus DS was biting b/c of teething, so I was going to have to stop anyway.

  • Check out kellymom, and offer a bottle when you would normally offer the breast.

If you're weaning for the sole purpose of not wanting your son to order a happy meal and then grab the boob to wash down the hamburger, I think your imagination may be running a bit wild.

Fwiw, I'm an extended BFer, letting my kids self wean. I've never experienced what you described.

  • I was sooo joking about the Happy Meal bit!!!. I don't personally believe in extending breastfeeding much past a year, however, I am certainly not being judgmental. My belief is that if mom and baby are happy with it, than that is far more important. The world could certainly use more well adjusted, confident, and emotionally supported children. Thanks!
