Success after IF

New here!

Hi I am new here and was thinking this would be the place to come for success stories when your DH has retrograde ejaculation. We recently found out just what the problem was and he was put on Chlomid and Sudafed to get the semen to come out. It works when he is alone, and I'm assuming it works when we DTD as well. I hope someone here has success with this and can share their story with me. this will be the third cycle trying, so it is not like we have tried for a very long time but I'm hopeful it happens soon. Thanks!

  • I mainly lurk, but do have experience with this.  And success, DS is a perfectly healthy 5 month old.

My DH has retrograde ejaculation due to surgery he had as a child.  We saw an RE and an urologist.  We tried 5 IUI's because he does have sperm that they were able to collect - after we DTD, he would void what was in his bladder into a cup like they'd do for someone without this condition.  The RE's office would then extract the sperm to perform the IUI.

Unfortunately the IUI's did not work and they wanted us to move to IVF, which insurance didn't cover.  What we did after that was he went on clomid (diagnosed with low testosterone) and we also researched additional vitamins to add to our diets (zinc, vitamin C, vitamin B12, etc - we referenced the book Making Babies by Dr. Sami David).  I also started doing acupuncture twice a month and did this for 4 months.  With the clomid/vitamins, his count went from 60 million to 210 million (motility stayed the same at around 50%).

I have heard that Sudafed can work to temporarily correct the condition.  It tends to work on those with retrograde ejaculation due to diabetes.  Since DH's was due to surgery we didn't have success with this.

Then, what worked was home insemination (aka, the turkey baster method).  Since I was doing temp charts and also using the CBE ovulation sticks, we were very in tune with my cycle.  We also tried this for 5 cycles - and it worked on the 5th one.  In my desperate many google searches about this, I came across a couple of medical journal articles about this.  It doesn't have a high success rate, but can work - and did for us.  Whatever he would void into the cup we would collect into a 10 ml needleless syringe and inject into me.

The method is a bit unconventional and I don't think you should discount seeing medical professionals.  However, I figured we had nothing to lose by trying it, and since it worked it I am very grateful we tried.

Happy to answer any other questions about this!

  • Well that is interesting that the 'turkey baster' did work for you! I am glad for you! I hope I don't have to go that route because I am sure my DH will look at me like I  have 5 heads if I told him to do that. LOL

He has the retrograde ejaculation due to diabetes and he seems to do well with the Sudafed. He only uses that when I am ovulating to get the *** out of him. I hope that we don't have to do many cycles of this... it is only the third cycle of us doing this. I will go on to IUI if we have to.

Thanks for the response! Very good to hear someone has had luck!
